In case the O.P doesn't know...
THe high performance Jacketed Hollow points
currently include:
Speer Gold Dot
Remington Golden Saber
Federal HST & Hydra Shok
Hornady XTP
Winchester SXT
A notch above this is
the Barnes XPB HP - it is not jacketed but
solid copper retains bullet weight and is very
good for penetrating windshields, & Other barriers
CorBon's DPX line & a couple of other
ammo makers market lines with their own trade name
but it's spendy probably 2.5 times the cost of
a premium jacketed HP.
At the lower less expensive end of the spectrum:
Of course there's also a good solid cast Semi Wadcutter
that's been around for 120+ years and cost less than JHPs.
and a full metal jacket that isn't a round point but has a flat tip
will have more surface area to impact upon the target.
Sp, once you decide on a platform, be it semi-auto or a
wheel gun, and the cartridge chambering you judge to be
sufficient for defensive purposes, go try some of these - ther's
no one magic bullet and cartridge combo - YOU need to find
out which works best in your gun, as well as which ones you shoot
best. and Practice, Practice Practice,
You might think about a practice load that is the same
bullet weight, and velocity so that it is more economical to
shoot at range regular ( weekly, every other week, or monthly)
sessions so that your practice ammo shoots to the same Point of
Aim (POA) and Point of IMpact (POI).
I like Gold Dots and Golden Sabers but dang when it's 20 rds a box
they can be expensive. You might find boxes of 50 rds via online shopping
and make a 250 /500 rd purchase to save on the HD/SD ammo, & buy
practice ammo prior to a range session at Wal Mart or wherever you fine it.
I've found WIn. SXT in 50 rd box off the shelf and it's perhaps 70% of the cost per rd of those 20 rd boxes.
