I BELIEVE SO ALSO IN PLENTY OF CASES

Are there any proven cases where A large caliber was too much gun?

Probably .380, although my smallest is a 9mm

9mm and 38SPL. There probably is plenty of data that supports smaller caliber doing just fine, but that's what I have so that's what I use.

I always carry as big a caliber as possible, given certain dress and concealability requirements. I have yet to encounter any circumstances where a Ruger LCP (.380 ACP) could not be carried. Thus, so far, .380 ACP is the smallest caliber I carry--although I much prefer .45 ACP.

For my everyday use I carry my NAA mini 22 mag. It has 3 CCI Maxi Mag's and 2 shot shell rounds in it. I also carry a few refills for it. The shot shells are enough to catch any ones attention and if not the CCI loads will. I have other guns for PD here at home, but to carry and be able to speak louder than words, the mini is fine for me, it really depends on where you are living as well. I live in a area where I would say at least 85% of the people have CCW permits, so there is not much need to carry larger as most of the crime is someone who has drank to much and is speeding or things like that. The idea of everyone having their own protection in these parts is very comforting. I live in the mountains and am within 40 miles from both Tennessee and Kentucky and actually the shot shells are loaded in two of my firearms and one is on my lawnmower for snakes or any other little surprise that arises while cutting the field. I also have shot shell loaded in my 9mm derringer.

Shotshells fired from a NAA won't penetrate the thin cardboard box the regular ammo came in, even from 5-6 feet. In a fast developing life and death encounter, I may only get one shot, so I want it to be effective, not irritating.

I carry because it makes me feel more secure, particularly when I am with family and responsible for their well-being. I haven't been in a life-threatening situation in 64 years, at least as a civilian, and will likely never be. Still, I feel better when carrying.

That said, I now settle for pocket carrying a 380 in urban and suburban environments. In the Rocky Mountains, during hikes and camping, I carry a minimum of 357. At home, I carry a 380, knowing that an 18.5" barrel 12 gauge shotgun is close by. On long trips to areas for which I am unfamiliar, I carry 9 mm. At work, where I love my job, I don't carry because it is not permitted.:(

David, I know for a fact that the NAA mag .22 will do better than that, I do see your point and I have other means of PD, however in the area I live, I feel I will never have to pull my gun other than a snake or rat in the yard. If I was in Detroit or LA or places that I felt I needed more than the NAA I would be for sure leaving it home and carry something tuned for the job. Like it is said, a gun is like a tool, so I carry what I feel to be the right tool for the job. I feel that the OP asked for personal opinions of what I would carry and my first post answered that with my answer and explanation of why that is why I chose it. I really do think everyone has different methods and uses for their firearms. I have stated mine. I am not trying to be disrespectful of your knowledge of firearms.

I have to laugh as just last week I was startled by a snake that was about 4 foot long. I shot it towards it's rear with shot shell or snake shot/rat shot and it did not kill it, but it stopped in it's track and I went on and it was gone. I really dont want to kill anything, I am not a hunter but that is what I meant by using the right tool. The NAA did what I have had it for, it has been used for this type of thing for a while now.

and that is what it's all about---

What is the lowest [smallest] caliber I'll carry?

The lowest I carry is 9x19mm. I carry .40 S&W a majority of the time.
