Anyone have any data on what is the most common caliber Auto round? 9MM?, .45?, is one clearly more readily available than the other? Thanks in advance.

+ 1 for .22LR but if you are talking service rounds then 9mm.

9mm is in world wide service, with soldiers, cops and civilians

The 40 is a US cop round and some civilians and no soldiers (except USCG as part of DHS)

The 45 is a US civilan round and some cops and some select soldiers

If someone where to pick you up and drop you just about anywhere in the world the 9mm round would be somewhere in that area.

To be more specific, I am trying to decide between the 9MM and .45 ACP, based on the availability of ammunition in the USA during good times and bad. What is there more of out there right now?

Boy, you got that right! :D

In centerfire calibers worldwide, it is far and away the 9mm, with the .40 S&W gaining rapidly in the U.S. police & commercial markets.
I'd say the .45 ACP is probably still in third place in the U.S., but not even a blip on the radar anywhere else.

Nothing else is even close.

I am pretty sure there is "plenty" of each. 9x19mm is far more popular.

9mm and .45 are both readily available, and can usually be found at local Wal Marts, gun stores, and the like.

9mm is considerably cheaper.

The 'ol deuce deuce is hands down the most common caliber in the world.

I don't see the USA running out of either anytime soon. However, it matters how much you have stockpiled in your closet, more that how much is floating around in stores.

In terms of sheer popularity, the .22 long rifle wins hands down. For a service round, the 9mm seems the likely winner. For those living in the United States, the 9mm and .45 auto should be available virtually everywhere centerfire handgun ammunition is sold. I strongly suspect the same is true for the .38 Special and .357 rounds as well.

It seems that you're looking for a SHTF round. In that case 9mm is the best choice, not only for availability, but it's smaller size and lesser weight makes it a better choice for storage and carry as well.

Got to be 9MM for pistol rds. Available in just about all countries. .45 not allowed in some.

The .22 LR is in a class all by itself but; 9 mm Luger, 9 Makarov, 38 Super, .32 acp & the 7.62 Tokarev are the most common found elsewhere in the world.

I would agree with 3rdpig. If you are looking for a SHTF round, the 9mm is your best choice over the .45acp. However, for that type of situation, the .22 can't be beat. It's good to dispatch away vagrant dogs and other critters that would abound in such scenario. Plus, it also serves as a personal protection round. It may not have too much stopping power, but no one wants to get popped with it either. And best of all, a box of 500 cost $11 at Wal-Mart. It's very affordable to stockpile.

No armed service except for the USCG. In the reorganization of federal agencies following 9/11 the USCG was brought under DHS performing a federal law enforcement mission. However, Coast Guardsmen and Coast Guard assets can still be deployed outside of the US for military missions under the US Navy. For this reason the USCG keeps both JHP and FMJ ammo for their two respective missions. Since they're primarily under the DHS they're issued the same .40 S&W SIG-Sauer pistols as the rest of the DHS is. They use these same pistols with the FMJ ammo for the military mission.

The above may not be worded in the correct technical language of the law, but that's how things are done to the best of my understanding.

.22LR

Centerfire? Winchester says 9mm according to M. Ayoob.

September/October 2007 American Handgunner
COPTALK column by Massad Ayoob

“While 9mm is still far and away the best selling centerfire handgun caliber among retail customers, the .40S&W is the clear-cut bestseller in the police sector, followed by the 9mm and .45ACP.”

ugaarguy : You are correct about the Coast Guard being an exception to the 40 round in their roll as cops. I forgot about the DHS shuffle.

On deployment in military ops under the rules of war they would need to go FMJ. I would hate to have to supply them with 40 cal rounds if they are the only US/Nato personel using them.

Most militaries try to standardize ammo in a war zone.

9mm
reasonably inexpensive, i keep about 1000 rounds on hand, can be purchased anywhere guns are sold, even walmart

Go with the .45

Out of some guns it feels as if you are shooting a .22. (well, almost)_:)

Look at it this way.... which gun would you least like to get shot with considering dead is dead.

A lot to be said for hidden and lots more ammo in 9mm......
so it goes, compromise in every decision in the universe.....:p
