Today I replaced both the hammer pin and the ejection side hammer pin washer, but I'm not sure how to flare the pin's hollow end in order to retain the washer. I understand there is a special tool, but I don't have it, so I'm wondering if you can recommend a way to peen or flare the end in a way that's reliable and won't cause any damage to the parts or their surroundings.

I understand there is a special tool

Per Kuhnhausen actually two tools. Punches to be exact. You can make them from common punches. The first one has a pyramid shaped tip with 4 flats and an included angle of roughly 90 degrees. It will leave 4 stake marks in the end of the hammer pin. The second is a flat faced punch used to finish flattening the end of the pin. Both are roughly .200" in diameter. Put a solid support under the left side of the pin while staking.

You don't happen to have a picture of the tip, do you? I'm not sure what "included" angle means.

Thanks, Bill. I think I get the picture. So, it seems that a phillips bit is pretty close, don't you think?

I've used a philips bit on a number of them and it worked out just fine.
