Hi, I'm trying to find out what this scope is. It is a J. Unertl optic co. brand. It is very long, about two feet. There is a spring in the center. Model on box -Pro 200 24X. Anyone know about this? What's it worth also. Thanks, Matt.
John Unertl made scopes like yours for long range target & varmint shooting back in the 50's - 60's.
They were also used by Army & Marine snipers on bolt-action Remington 700 & Winchester Model 70 rifles during the Vietnam war.
We used them at 5th. Inf. AMU on both match rifles, and sniper rifles.
We also had one mounted on a Browning .50 cal MG for sniper use, and it was very deadly accurate out to 2,000 yards or more!
The reason for the spring is that the scopes were not only big & long, but pretty heavy.
Recoil of a large caliber rifle would shake them apart.
So, the scope was made to slip in the mounts during recoil, then the spring returned it to zero.
I don't have a good idea of the current value of your scope, but it should be at least several hundred dollars or more.
Thanks, I inherited a lot of stuff from my uncle and I am trying to go through it and figure out what a lot of it is. I havn't gotten into long range shooting and am pretty ignorant about optics.
was reading some stuff bout Unertl scopes a while back, don't remember where, but folks were offering their first born for it.very good scopes.might try a Google search. jwr
Depending on the model condition and power, its worth from $400 to $900. Usually a few on ebay.
Similar is a Lyman Super Target Spot, the Unertls seem to go for more now, but in the day the Lyman was the one to have.
