What is this strange disease?

I'm thinking of calling it "battle rifle-itis." I think I contracted it from a CMP M1 Garand that I bought last summer.

You see, until that old M1 showed up at my door, I had never owned a semi-auto centerfire rifle. I had owned plenty of firearms, including rifles, revolvers, autopistols and shotguns. I'd fired military style rifles before, including the G36 that is my brother's SWAT-issue weapon (he also has an MP5, but that's another story). For some reason, though, I never had any desire for a black rifle.

Shortly after getting my CMP Garand, I started reading about them. I bought every book I could find on the history of the Garand. I took it to the range with a few hundred rounds of surplus Korean ammo. The "ping" resonated in my soul.

Shortly after that, a friend offered me a like new PTR-91 with a bunch of mags and 400 rounds of surplus .308 for a great price. I figured, "why not" and bought it.

Not long after, I developed a strange craving for an FAL. I couldn't stop thinking about them. My heart would pitter-pat and the sight of an SA58. A used SA58 Para Congo gave me temporary satisfaction, and drained my bank account.

Within a month, the disease reared its ugly head again. I spotted a like new Arsenal SA M7S (AK clone) on the rack at my local toy shop. I had to have it, so out came the credit card.

My basement is now full of surplus .30-06, .308 and 7.62x39 ammo. My safe is too crowded. And yet ... and yet ...

I want more. An H&K SL-8 was calling out to me the other day. I swear that all those AR-15s, that until now have always looked alike to me, are starting to seem, well, desirable.

Is there a cure for this disease?

P.S. My Garand also keeps telling me that she is lonely. She wants sisters. Lots of them.

Yep u've got it! and there is no cure save the road ur travellin
keep buying more(you'll find trading HURTS) easier to quit smokin rocks but you meet a better class o people thisaway!

"Battle Rifle-itis" is only treated, a permanent cure is very rare.

The only cure I've ever seen was a friend who had a very severe case; his wife applied the (*ahem) cure which lasted about 6 months. He then developed a case of "Hidden Battle Rifle-itis."

"Old" BattleRifle-ITIS

Some have been known to contract "old battlerifle-itis", where by the afflicted can ussualy sneak a NEW battle rifle right under the nose of his significant other, even when they apply the (*Ahem) treatment, by claiming something like "this old thing?".

HEHE!

"Hidden Battle Rifle-itis."

Been there and still am. This is more expensive that smoking. I started with a plain .22. 8 rifles later in the last eight months and thousands of rounds to and it still doesn't go away. Why do they have to make so many calibers???

Yup, three years ago I was a shotgun and pistol guy...lots of them.

My only rifles were a 22, my deer hunting rifle. Then I started getting interested in rifles in general and playing around with battle rifles. Now my battle rifle section looks like (not shown, WASR-10, K98, P17 Enfield)

I've also picked up several other rifles...including my sweet baby, the 45-70 Sharps.

Yeah, its a disease but revel in its symptoms.

I currently suffer from the same desiese. I CRAVE combloc guns! I already have an SKS, a M39, and I'm working on getting a svt40 before the month is over. I dont even have money for gas anymore, I spend it all on ammo or save it for guns. I have to resort to bumming rides from friends and family. But it's worth it! :D

Unfortunately the treatment is worse than the disorder. There are various treatments which are little more than replacement disorders based on which part of life you're in. Treatments are as follows

Early adult life:
Chacingwomenisexpensive-itis
then
KidsAreExpensivepets-itis

Later in life is:
divorceisexpensivecauseit'sworthit-itis
collegeisexpensiveforpets-itis

About this time another real expesive one kicks in:
IneedAcorvetteAndA23YearoldGirlfriendformySecondchildhood-itis

Then there is the last stage where your gunbuying will all but stop:
ImOldAndICantSeeTheDamnGunMuchLessTheTarget-Itis
otherwise known as cateracs

Hello, my name is Bravo11 and I'm a Gun-a-holic.
I have been sober for 2 weeks.
If I'm good I my be able to remain sober until Christmas
but I'm sure I will have to indulge in a gun purchase then.

Yeah, I know that one, I have a "anything that goes bang-itus" which a severe "I don't have one of THOSE yet" condition as well... Next on the list is probably a larger safe...

Dang, now that you'd mention that I'm gonna have to get a second safe as well SOON - that's gonna hurt spending the extra $$ on a safe instead of more guns.

I think my symptoms are getting worse.

I went to the Pasadena Gun Show last weekend to pick up some ammo. I saw a table with a crate of nice looking SKS rifles for $130. I then saw a vendor with 1000 rd cases of Wolf commie ammo for $80 or $90.

It didn't hit me right way, but I have pretty much decided that $250 for a rifle and 1000 rounds is pretty good and plan to buy it next time I see it. Don't know much about the SKS. I have seen a lot of comments on THR about them that are all mostly positive though. It should be fun to play with. :)
