Lately I am thinking on getting a replica Dragoon (Uberti). I know of 4 models: Whitneyville, 1st, 2nd, and 3rd.

Which of these is your favorite and why?

Thanks!

I like the 3rd model because of the trigger guard. The square trigger guard on the older models bangs my knuckles.

I have smaller hands and so I doubt the trigger guard would be a problem for me. But I like the looks of it anyway. That puts me in the first 3 you mentioned. I figured, were I to get one (I'd get a Walker), I'd likely get the 2nd model for the bolt holes. I'm guessing this was an improvement.

A big ol vote for Whitney!!!!! Because , the lines of the Walker (grip) and size of the Dragoon!! Puuuuuuuuuuuurty!!!!!! Love the right side with no trig./bolt screwpin holes (a la Walker)! Did I say Puuuuuuuuuuurty? Mine (and my reg. 1st Mod.D) both are converted so best of both worlds!!
With the smaller handle of the Whitney, it may not have the "knuckle" issue (Ive owned them all and never had that prob.)

I love my 3rd but the Walker grip is more comfortable. So I might actually like the Whitneyville even better. Need one of each to know for sure. ;)

I like them all. The first model has the oval cylinder bolt but not much different else where. I had a 3rd model uberti dragoon, but traded it to David Carrico for some period leather and stuff. He supplied the movie True Grit (new one) with leather, saddles and rented them some guns. Come to find out, the dragoon Mattie has in the movie where she shoots it at her nemesis was mine I traded. It was one of three they had in case of a break down. I believe it suddenly gained a lot of value with some screen time.

But back to your question, it shot really well and would hold 50 grains of 3F. Lot of fun.

CraigC, you and I are too much alike!! There's NOT a Dragoon we wouldn't like!!! Lol
I know you like the Walker (love mine too!) so you need a Whitney (so you'll know for sure!!) converted of course!! Woooo Hoooo!!!

dragoon

i like my 3rd model dragoon-- slight mod on my dragoon..shoots great with 2f--less recoil than 3f..
ive tried various-powders with it black-pyro-pletts..black powder really does make a mess--but i like the extra smoke and smell of it !!
my other bp are 1851 navy[brassy]--old pistol kit my dad made years ago back in the 70s .50 cal--and a old muzzle loader thats been in the family going on 5 generations from germany.......
plus a few small cannons i made on my dads lathe years ago--fun stuff........
i may pick up a .54 cal old style muzzle loader--would like to try to bag a moose with that !! seems like 80-100 grains of 2f would do the job !

3rd. Its not only the knuckle thing, but the square back guards allow increasingly more space between the tip of the trigger and the guard as it comes back, then goes forward again. On the first Superblackhawk I had, it pinched my trigger finger when shooting it, and I've found it to be similar when shooting square backs one handed.

I'm working on doing a round guard from a Superblackhawk for a 45 Colt Blackhawk. It has the backstrap thinned front to back also, copied from a Cassull grip frame. Should give more hand room length when wearing gloves.

The Walker grip is smaller at the top. My hands are a good med. size and I like the feel of the grip. The fact that it is a hold over from the Walker is part of the cool factor to me!!

Thanks! Those are all very nice!

Question about the Whitneyville Dragoon -

I read this model has a V shaped mainspring and lacks the little roller wheel on the hammer - does this have any negative impact on shooting?

As for the cylinder notches lacking lead-ins and the square shape - is this mostly cosmetic as long as the revolver is timed well?

That is correct but with tuning, they are as amazing as any of the Mods. of Dragoons!!
Actually, the Walkers/Dragoons seem to benefit the most from action tuning. The oval locking notches will not be a problem with the set up that I do to all revolvers. You can get an idea of the state of tuning by watching Brushhippies video "Fanning Washbusters 3rd model Dragoon". If I was techno enough, I would put a link here.

Send whichever you buy to The Goon and you'll be amazed at what you get back. Do as he said and watch Brushippie's video. Mike did one of my colts and it's an amazing BP revolver now.:D

That is an awesome video - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VnPBsos5k7c - I have a '61 visiting the Goon right now, and my other open tops are getting in line to go next.

Definitely when I get a Dragoon, it will make the pilgrimage to see Mike. At this point I am leaning toward the Whitneyville - but Walkers seem pretty cool also
