What is your favourite bolt-action hunting and target rifle,?

pretty much any bolt action from the big names works just fine, be it winchester 7, remington 700, ruger 77, savage, browning, or what have you.

you can go with something like weatherby, but as far as the actual bolt action, aside from having more locking lugs, it is pretty much the same. Weatherbys are great rifles, but lots of this has to do with what goes on with other bits and parts. Of course, some of the higher grade remingtons are just the same if not moreso as far as superb quality, but of course you pay for this. But by and large, all factory bolt action rifles are pretty damn equal.

now, some may have features you like or don't like. They have the safty in different positions, and have a couple different types of extractors, etc etc, but that is all personal prefrence, not 'better'

Most of my hunting days were spent with a custom rifle I built from a 1903A3 Springfield rifle in 30-06 . Just so happened that the target rifle I became most attached to was also built on a 1903A3 action.

That was at a time when the surplus guns could be had for $25 and many were converted for hunting use. As were the fine Mauser military rifles available then.

Today most any commercial bolt action will give great service . One of the most popular being the Remington .

Of late, there has been a notable following for the Savage bolt action guns. They have gained a reputation for being accurate at a very modest cost .

I've owned and shot Remington, Savage, Ruger, as well as converted military bolt actions using Mauser and Springfield actions - I haven't a complaint about any of them.

if you can find a used Parker hale at a gunshop, get it. they are english made, just beautiful styled wood, bbl finish is allways like glass, and they are usually one hole punches. But I tell you, they are so beautiful, i bought a mosin 38 carbine, so I wouldn't scratch up the Parker.

I have a very nice 1917 Enfield in .30-06 that had good sporter job done a long time ago (I think mid-1950s). It shoots at least MOA out to 200 yards (I don't have a longer range to try) and it could probably shoot better, but I can't.:(

I would like to make a nice Enfield No.4 sporter out of a bubba gun or a barreled action (I would never cut on a complete gun). I would put a nice maple or walnut stock on it and a set of notch and post iron sights. I think that would make a handsome rifle that would be quick to shoulder and fire.

Not sure about the "best" sterling180, but I much prefer the Winchester Model 70 followed by the Ruger 77. This is due to their Mauser-based actions. I realize the Winchester is out-of-production, but it's still very available.

Since reliability is very important to me, I will forever stay away from Remington bolts due to a bad experience with their internal extractor contraption and I don't like the barrel nut feature on the Savage guns.

Having shot a few friends different mods our & old remmy 700 I can say that most bolt guns are generic. The only gun I actually hate to shoot is a remington 710. It feels way to cheep and the bolt sticks.

My old Remington 700 VS (Bull Barrel) in .308 Win. Versatile, accurate. A factory trigger that can be adjusted to rival any other. I'ts heavy, not a mountain rifle, but then I don't hunt mountains. I've owned or had use of a dozen 700's...my first was a first-year model in 6mm Rem that has always been one of the most accurate rifles I've ever used. I'd rather that the Rem. had the one-piece forged bolt of older Winchester 70's, and all factory rifles need trigger tweaking and stock work...but on the whole...

What is your favourite bolt-action hunting and target rifle?

This would be a good year to get a 2006 Remington Special Edition .30-06...

All excellent shooters.

Since you are over in the UK why not check out the Accuracy International rifles?

For centerfire, I like my Savage Model 12. Very accurate, good trigger and reasonable cost. For rimfire, CZ 452 for the exact same reasons.

My favorite, probably because I've benn shooting it for nearly 37 years and therefore am a little comfortable with it is my Remington model 788 in .243. Also have the same in .308. VERY well made production rifles that are beginning to increase in value.
Don't think you could go wrong with either the Rem 700 or the Ruger M77, either--have one in 30-06 and the other in 7 mm.
Love all four of them.

I'd have to say that my two favorite bolt action and hunting rifles are my No.4 Mark 1 .303 British and my K98. I'm leaning towards trying out my Persian M98 long rifle in 8mm for deer this next season though... We'll see.

For commercial rifles, I have always liked the Savage, especially with the redesigned bolt and the accutrigger.
I have also owned a lot of older sporterized military bolt rifles, 03 Springfielsd, 1917 Enfields, British Lee-Enfields, all kinds of Mausers, and found good points in all of them. I currently am doing a little work on a 1918 BSA Sht Lee Enfield that someone modified about 50 years ago. Great old rifle.

Mark

You asked about bolt rifles, but I must say I also really like Marlin lever guns.
