I shoot a lot of Federal Lightning HV load #510B (previously Champion #510) primarily purchased at Walmart. For the price, it is hard to beat. I also shoot a lot of Remington Thunderbolt as I view it as a good baseline for comparing more expensive ammunition to it. My favorites are "medium expensive" such as Wolf Match Target and Wolf Match Extra, but I don't shoot them as much. I would like to say that I shoot lots of match grade ammunition, but I don't. I have a fair supply, but I don't shoot it that much. I use the $12+ a box stuff primarily for testing my rifles, but rarely shoot it due to the price. I don't shoot competitively yet, so if my groups are a little larger than I would like due to ammunition choice, tis life. But I do want to know what shoots well in a particular rifle.
Been shooting some of the CCI Standard Velocity stuff of late and it's not bad. The Federal Champion Target #714's are good too when you can find them.
Shooting cheap ammo in a $500 to $1000 rifle; that's me. But I really enjoy a fine rifle. If I get 1/2" groups at 50 yds, I'm generally satisfied. Remington Thunderbolts generally give me 3/4" groups at 50 yds with some flyers when I try. I strive for better, but that takes cash. If you think 22 ammo is expensive now.... wait until the VAT is inflicted on US consumers to pay down the debt.
I seldom shoot good ammo in my handguns. I'm just not a good enough shot to make it worthwhile. I'm more interested in stuff that works (few FTF) and stuff that feeds reliably in my semi-auto pistols.
The Winchester Power Point X22LRPP is my favorite. It's a full-up 40 grain copper plated hollow point that expands and holds together. Runs clean box after box, and is accurate enough for 100 yd varminting. Best combination of price and performance I've found.
$32 per 500 from S&G Ammo. Not the cheapest you can buy, but well worth the small premium IMO.
I'm fairly new to 22's, but currently chewing through a 5000 round case of Winchester Super X 40gr solid HV. Seems to be decent, accurate and generally consistent. Not the cheapest, but far from the most expensive.
