What kind of AR should I buy?

Don't purchase an AR yet, the prices are inflated right now. Once people realize guns aren't going to get banned the prices will come down.

How inflated are they?

I just bought an MApartsInc upper. It's produced at the lmt factory. It doesn't go through the same tests as lmt, but I don't think you can get a better production line.

dude, whatever you can afford should work just fine for you. i havent been around EVERY brand at the range, but ive been around enough to know that todays AR manufacturers care enough to make a quality product. just shop around for a good deal and you shouldnt feel let down at all.

Since you got the Stag could you provide a little feedback?
I saw RRA has an 18" bull barrel that is right between the 16 and 20 you mentioned.
I also read a great article that summed up the velocity vs length dispute quite well:
For every 2" of barrel you gain or lose ~45fps of velocity (at the barrel), so your 16" will be ~90fps slower than the 20" (I know there are many other variables like twist and manufacturer, but all things being equal, with the same load, this is what you will get.)

ENENEN, it sounds like you did good!

There are few SHTF situations in which I would feel inadequate with an AR, an AK, and an 870, and most of them involve aliens with lasers & things.
