What kind of finish is this?

Can anyone tell me what type of finish is on the controls of these revolvers?

My Taurus 605 Titanium has a finish on the trigger, hammer, and cylinder release that looks almost like color case hardening -it's colorful blotches. Is it color case hardening, or something else?

The controls on my S&W M&P 360 have a similar blotchy look, although it's mostly shades of grey rather than different colors. Any idea what this finish is? It looked like this from the factory, it's not just due to wear.

I'm looking to have a wedding band made with some kind of firearm-themed finish. Would appreciate any suggestions for a finish that would hold up to that kind of wear.

Wedding band

Is there some variation on case hardening that would hold up to the wear of being on a wedding band?

Other suggestions for a gun related finish that would hold up to that kind of wear?

I've heard some types of bluing get a "patina" as they wear. What types are those, and would that hold up to being on a ring?

I think another problem with color case hardening is that it tends to fade over time when subjected to sunlight.

Apparently that is an illustration of case hardening done for hardening purposes only; case hardening can be done for both hardening and to bring out a decorative finish, but brightly colored case hardening is sometimes considered an antique look. A serious modern tactical firearm will have a subdued case hardening effect.

I would avoid 'blueing' as a ring finish, due to the acids and oils in one's skin making it rust.
Color case hardening is much more resistant, but can corrode in time. I am currently restoring an old heavily worn and rather rusty unmarked M1860 Army clone, the blueing is rusty but the case hardened parts clean up very nicely!
You could also go with 'black chrome' for a more industrial look.

I have a Taurus Titanium which I believe is called a "total" titanium. In other words the trigger has no finish other than perhaps some color variation from the heat treatment.

I believe they are making some jewelry out of titanium so you could check on that.

Personaly I would stick with precious metals like Gold, or Platinum.

Yes. I would probably get a ring hard chromed if I wanted something wear resistant. My band is a highly polished tungsten carbide, that has been remarkably hard wearing, and looks very nice but is nota typical gun fish obviously.

You could get a decent base metal and then have it hard chromed with a nice matte look for something simple, a tasteful yet hard wearing.

Just throwing out an idea. What would happen if you had a band color case hardened (Turnbull case hardening would be awesome) and then had some kind of clear coat applied like on automobile paint?

What happens if you color case harden something, and then melonite it? Just curious. I'm sure it'd turn out like crap, but I'm just wondering.

If you make the rings out of titanium you can anodize them, but the colors will be a brighter hue. I've done it on plate, and you could practice on scraps as you get the technique down.
