What kind of scope? Red dot or magnifying?

For my SKS and maybe to stick on a to-be-bought .22 rifle, what kind of scope would you get? Maybe if I like it I'll try to find a non-disfiguring way to attach it to my K98 Mauser.
Red dot, or a regular kind of magnifying scope?

This is kind of just for fun, and to hopefully let me shoot more accurately. My eyes aren't bad but they aren't what they used to be, so I was thinking something with some magnification would help see better, and also help me aim more consistently with a better and sharper sight picture.

Is a red dot, non magnifying scope sufficient to help one shoot better? Is it easier or more fun to shoot with the red dot? I've looked through someone else's red dot scope (on a pistol) and thought it was cool to look at, but I don't know if would work as well as I hope.

can't say much about an SKS, but an EOTech on my AK has made it tons more fun to shoot. Especially in dark places like an indoor range, or.. the dark!

For target shooting rather than use as a weapon, I'd choose a magnifying scope, especially if your vision can use some help. I'm nearsighted, and even with glasses I shoot far better with a scope than without one.

Red dots can help, since you can shoot with both eyes open. You can actually do a pretty neat trick with a red dot because of stereo vision. If the lens of your red dot is occulded, you will still have the dot visible overlaying the target due to both eys picking up a seperate image.

How far you want to shoot, and at what? If you're talking 1MOA or less at 100+yds, then get something with magnification. If your going to be reducing the worlds supply of watermelons at 100yds or the like, then a red dot could work just fine.

Overall a red dot can be a lot of fun. It really lends itself to fast engagements and rapid fire shooting. Obviously magnified glass goes the other route.
