What Knife?

i have a ka-bar warthog with a tanto blade on it i got for chirstmas 2009 from my sister and i carry it everyday. it has yet to fail me in any task. do you carry your knife for defense, as a tool, or both? mine is a tool first and a back up to my hi point c9 second.

The definitive answer is . . . it depends.

If you look for "carry" or "EDC" in posts from me, you'll see different lists.

Today's list:
  • Case Sod Buster (large)
  • Kershaw Packrat (orange)
  • Case John Deer Medium Stockman
  • Case Peanut
  • EKA/Wenger Executive Major SAK
  • Leatherman Wave

Here are pics of some of what's listed:

Yesterday the Packrat pocket had a Buck Vantage (Avid) and the full-sized belt pouch had an Normark/EKA Swede 92.

Which one is in my hand at any given moment depends on what needs cutting and who's near me (around admin staff I use the "cute" and "friendly" knives).

Last week the pocket had a Buck EcoLite 112 and the punch had a Buck EcoLite 110 for most of the week, but for a couple days the pocket had a Buck Paradigm (Avid). The "slim pocket" had a Lone Wolf Paul Presto instead of the John Deere stockman.

So, what will I carry tomorrow?

It depends.

:D

either a gerber 06 automatic s30v, or a sog flash II. gerber was issued in a previous army unit, good knife, but big and heavy. i bought the sog before deploying to afghanistan because it was a lot lighter. both are serrated because they are much more useful that way.

At work, I carry a Byrd Crow (plain blade) tucked into a back pocket. Weekends, it's either the Crow or a Buck Vantage Pro in the back pocket. I also usually have a BM 10510 Gamer within reach, either in my car or on my desk.

Currently between 3 models in rotation:

Buck Odyssey select I got on clearance at Wally World for $18

CRKT m21 titanium coated w/spear point

my new favorite: Spyderco Resilience w/ full flat grind in 8Cr13MoV.

I also see a blue or purple Delica or Endura in VG-10 in my future.

I generally carry three knives daily. Knife number 1 is a "social" knife. It is used when I am around polite company in a social setting. It is normally a knife that will not raise eyebrows or make little grandmother's faint. Today the social knife was this Remington Harness Jackknife from the 20's...belonged originally to my Great Grandfather.

Knife number 2 is usually a larger lock blade for heavy cutting chores. Still a slipjoint normally and carried in a belt pouch. Today it was an A.G. Russell lockback, a very stout swell center sunfish design.

The third knife is for emergency use only. It never leaves my pocket and is intended for things like last ditch defense if both legs are broken and I can't run, or to cut a seatbelt in a car accident. It is never used for routine cutting chores. Today it was this 80's era black Spyderco Police Model.

I rotate my knives almost daily, with as many as I have most of my social knives don't get carried more than twice a year, some favorites work into the rotation more often. My locking and "tacticals" get carried more often as I have fewer in those two catagories.

I recently finished a Spyderco Mule Team in Aogami Super Blue steel with green canvas micarta handles.

I made a very slim Kydex sheath with an IWB J-hook belt clip rigged to allow it to be tuckable.

A very useful-sized fixed blade, and more discreet even than a folder clipped to my pocket.

It goes with me a lot of days now.

Opinel #8, my modification

OpinelliSmall2.jpg

Carbon steel
Cheap
Light as a feather
Surprisingly sturdy

And as you can see from the image performance is outstanding considering the size of the knife. I can make dozens of feather sticks and the edge remains sharp enough to shave.

It was ridiculously dull when I purchased it, but I got rid of the secondary bevel and sharpened it hair whittling sharp. Reshaped/stained the handle and forced a patina on the blade. Yes, I cheated.

Before this Opinel I used to carry a Spyderco Endura. I won't look back.

majority of the time, my edc is a spyderco endura. it's not unusual though to catch me with a number of other makes and models from time to time though. to include slipjoints, SAKS, fixed blades, and various other locking folders

Sam 1911,

That mule team is awesome! Love the setup too.

I have a Bark River "Fox River" that I would like to get some kydex set up for in a very similar way.

I, like Brother Greebly, have got a box full and they vary from day to day.

Lock back's Buck 110, S&W Lawman & Tatical, Kershaws , Old Gerber Gator Opinel #10 Carbon Steel.

Pocket knives I have Stockmans, Congress's, Barlows, Granddaddy Barlows, Scout, Canoes, and Tux patterns. :D

I want some of those better steel Buck Lockbacks that AG is always talking about.

I have my shirt tucked in today, so I am short 1 knife... Normally I have my red and black kiridashi horizontal on my belt.

But today it is 2 3" slippies in a leather pouch/sheath in my left pocket and my damascus flipper clipped in my right pocket.

For me, these are tools first, tools second and SD options last. And even when carrying my kiri also, which one I go for depends totally on the task, and who is around me at that time.

I don't like to weight my pocket down with large cutlery. I usually carry a Case peanut in CV, or more recently damascus with amber bone. Good cutting in a small package. If I need a larger blade, I'll use a Case CV sodbuster or one of my Opinels.

Carl.

I usually carry a Cold Steel AK-47. I still shudder every time I say the name. However, it's served me quite well. The finish didn't last long, but that's okay. My pockets on the other hand are torn to shreds...if anyone else gets one I STRONGLY recommend you sand down the G-10 under the belt clip a bit.

I carry a Sodbuster Jr., more to be used as a tool than a defensive weapon. I have moments when I wish it had blade more suitable for jobs where I need to pierce something with the tip of the blade to get a cut started, but in general it's a great little knife.
