What Liberals Want - the Constitution in 2020

dloken:

Many of the items on that list are theft, such as free lunches and free health care for selected classes of people. The rest, equal rights for women, et cetera, are plain old-fashioned common sense, and have nothing to do with leftists.

The Civil Rights Act of 1964 was passed by the Republican party over the vehement objections of the Democratic (sic) party.

"They refuse to stoop to the levels of the conservative propoganda machine"

Oh REALLY??? Did you happen to pick up a paper or watch a single news program with anything approaching regularity? From what I saw, neither side said much of anything approaching the truth. If it weren't so sad, it was laughable.

IMO-I wouldn't allow either party to mow my yard, let alone in my house.

The radical left is absolutely no better than the radical right-both want to micromanage your life, and neither has the guts to admit it.

My prediction? The left will slowly start wearing Republican buttons as they destroy the Democratic party, and we get the short stick in the end.

Between the two of them, there is no third party with the strength to fight them. The republicrats own the news papers and news organizations in general. This is kind of like watching Stalin and Hitler divide up Poland. I suspect the only way this will stop is if one or the other side makes a huge mistake and the people finally wake up.

...would recognize a right to "a useful and remunerative job"; sufficient earnings to provide "adequate" food, clothing, and recreation; a "decent" home; a "good education"; and "adequate medical care and the opportunity to achieve and enjoy good health."

 Well said, comrade!!!

Examples of what liberals really want (because they made it happen):

1. Child labor laws- becasue 8 year olds shouldn't have to work 80 hour weeks.

Agreed.

2. The Civil Rights Act of 1964- Because black folks are people, too (and sometimes want access to resturants and hotels).

Maybe. "Liberals" might take credit, but the Governor standing in front of the school door was a Democrat. As were the majority of the segregationists.

3. Women to have the right to vote- because it turns out they are people, too.

I disagree (with giving the Liberals credit for this). It was Wyoming, and then Colorado that first had women's sufferage. The elitist "liberals" of the northeast had to play catch-up on this one.

4. Medicare and Medicaid- Because liberals think the poor and elderly matter enough to have health care.

Agreed.

5. The EPA- to help us get clean air and water.

Disagree. Nixon enacted the EPA.

6. The minimum wage- Because getting paid in company script is only one law away from reality.

Minimum wage did not outlaw "company script". In addition, it has given rise to the demand for illegal immigration. This is not something the Liberals should be proud of.

7. The Securities and Exchange Commission-what, you think coporations would file those accounting reports without it?

Half good/half bad. SEC has prevented some corruption, but Enron et al still managed to exist. OTOH, the SEC paperwork is overwhelming for a small business, so they have a difficult time going public. Overall, a good thing.

8. School lunch programs- because children who come to school hungry shouldn't have to go home hungry.

Agreed.

9. Rape shield laws- because a rape victim shouldn't have to explain her entire sexual history after she's beaten down and sodomized by a predator.

Initially, a good thing. However, this one seems to be morphing into a law allowing the accussed to be prosecuted without ever facing his/her accuser. Potential for government abuse is real.

10. Birth Control-Think the right to buy the pill and condoms exists because of common sense? Think again- thank a liberal 1960's US Supreme Court.

I support access to birth control/ sex education, but is it a "right"?!?

Overall, the Liberals have a mixed record. And these are the "highlights".

I'm a poor college student. I earn everyhting I have. (OK mabee still living at home doesn't count  ) I have stanford loans that I have to pay back. I'll be dammed if someone comes to me and says that they want more of MY paycheck to "redistribute". :fire:

An Old joke, but a good one.

The difference between a Liberal and a Conservative

A Conservative and a Liberal are walking down the street and they come across a homeless man with a sign that says "Laid off, need work". The Conservative goes up to the man and asks him what he did for a living. The man replies that he worked in construction and was laid off because there are few new contracts. The Conservative asks the man if he is comfortable with manual labor. The man replies that he is. The Conservatice hands the man his business card and say's to come to his warehouse tomorrow for a job loading and unloading trucks. The Conservative then reaches into his pocket, gets $20, and gives it to the man.

The Liberal is impressed by this, and the two men soon come across another man with a sign saying "Laid off, need work" His story is the same, he was in construction and was laid off from the economic downturn. The Liberal then gives the man an application to apply for welfare, reaches into the Conservatives pocket, gets $20, gives the man $5, and keeps the $15 for "Administration Purposes"

That is the difference between a Liberal and a Conservative :p

I haven't read through all the conference material yet. I'm glancing through the conference blog. http://constitutionin2020.blogspot.com/

Most of it is fairly mundane. The point of the conference was for people to theorize what the Constitution could look like in 2020. Most people did not want to see major changes. More than a few voiced the wisdom of making any major changes. Most dealt with specific issues of existing aspects of the Constitution. Restrictions of felons after their sentence is passed. I noted one liberal questioned the constitutionality of former convicted felons being restricted from owning firearms. (Jonathan Simon) A handful had rather insane hypothetical ideas.

Much like the typical article on the Assault Weapons Ban in the media, this article picked at a few loose cannons and presented them as the norm.

Yes, both Democrats and Republicans have their own legacies of cripplingly stupid ideas. Democrats launched Social Security, which is a rather poor investment, and the welfare programs. Republicans have a history of corporate welfare. Savings and Loan scandal ($1.4 trillion dollars), airline bailout ($15 billion), etc.

Gee, I'm failing to be impressed by either party.

What Standing Wolf said!

I don't care how nice it makes people feel, redistribution is armed robbery.

Cass Sunstein was on the O'reilly factor a couple nights ago. Bill O'reilly ripped him a new one. It was pretty funny :D

They refuse to stoop to the levels of the conservative propoganda machine, and spew lies and hatred all day long. And they spend very little time defending themselves. Its pitiful.

Surely you jest, sir. 99% of the screechy, whiny positing we're subjected to daily in the name of "news" or "analysis" is done by the loony left. They routinely invent "rights" that are not. They routinely lie about facts, and attribute motives to their enemies that don't exist, and imagine fantastic scenarios that bely reality. They commonly want to take my money and give some of it to their current favorite un-privileged class and keep the rest, while never countenancing the idea that they should give away their own money. The lefties live in fear and fantasy while condemning traditional values. They scorn self-reliance, accountability and responsibility for one's own welfare. They spurn true charity.

They seem bent on tearing down the United States from within.

I would spit tobacco juice on them all if I chewed.

Conservative is just as bad as liberal. Their opinions may differ, but their desire for control is the same.

(Vote Libertarian)
:D

Uh the airline bailout was concocted by Tom Daschle. His wife was a very highly paid lobbyist for the airline industry while he was in office.

I'm glad his days of double dealing are over.

The Civil Rights Act of 1964 was passed by the Republican party over the vehement objections of the Democratic (sic) party
Back when many Northern liberals were in the Republican party (remember when it was the party of Lincoln, not the party of Haliburton?), and Southern Conservative Democrats (the objectors) hadn't formally taken over the GOP. BTW, the act was pitched (and passed) in honor of the memory of JFK. You can hear LBJ's pitch to pass the act in a number of recorded telephone conversations that were released to the public in the late 1990's.

Bill O'reilly is liar and a racist.
My office prosecuted a child murder case.
These facts were undisputed and O'reilly knew them (his show gathered the info):
1. All of the doctors agreed the baby was shaken to death.
2. Although the evidence clearly showed the child was shaken, the Judge told the Defense Attorney he did not believe the science that led to that conclusion.
3. The Judge suggested to the Defense Attorney that she ask for a bench trial (Judge decides guilt or innocence not jury).
4. During the bench trial, the Judge let the prosecutor and the defense know (before the case was over) that there was no way he would convict the Defendant of murder. He strongly suggested that the parties work out a plea to a lesser charge.
5. Based on his suggestion, we entered a plea agreement to Voluntary Manslaughter. The Judge had the authority to sentence between 1 year probation and 20 years in prison. He gave the Defendant probation.

Here's what O'reilly did:
1. He said the case was a slam dunk.
2. He said we didn't care about the case.
3. He said we were on our way to a certain victory, got lazy, and offered probation.
4. He said the Judge wanted to give prison time, but "his hands were tied".
Every time he said something critical of my boss or the Defendnat, he showed a picture of them. They are black.
5. Every time he praised the Judge, he showed a picture of him. He is white and looked like R. E. Lee.
6. He then gave out my boss's e-mail address for viewers to "comment to". My boss is still getting death threats.

O'reilly is an evil man. The end.

liberal activist judges are ruining our country this is the only way liberals can get there agenda forced upon us. Until we clean up the Judicial system our freeedoms are going to slowly fade away.

Name one.
Until then, I'll point out a conservative activist Judge: former Chief Alabama Chief Justice Roy Moore, who defied the law (Constitutional, Statutory, and Professional Standards of Conduct) until he was removed from the Court.
This is the guy who insisted on displaying the 10 commandments at a public building.

As a former Marine who spent 8 years sworn to defend the Constitution, I find the derogatory use of the term liberal offensive.

I am deeply offended that we use what should be a term of honor to refer to politicians who want to remove the liberties granted by the first and second amendments. The same politicians who want to tell me what I can and cannot do on my property with my house. The same politicians who want to tell me what modifications I can make to my personal vehicle. The same politicians who want to tell me what public land I cannot drive my personal vehicle on. The same politicians who want to take more of my money to give to an organization of cowboys to fight a so-called "war" on some drugs.

And I really resent that Republicans encourage this fallacy to continue. That can draw attention away from their own mistakes. IIRC, (And I do,) it was a Republican Governor that decided I can't be trusted with a rifle that fires rounds that are half an inch in diameter. I seem to vaguely recall that the first "AW" bans didn't come from Clinton, they came from Dubya's daddy. Bush Sr. got that ball rolling in '89. A conservative Republican sold my rights down the river first, not a Democrat.

So tell me again how the "liberal" Democrats are out to get my guns, while the upright and virtuous conservative Republicans are protecting my liberties.

For the most part, liberal values are fundamental American values. The biggest problem for liberals is they let themselves be defined by their critics. They refuse to stoop to the levels of the conservative propoganda machine, and spew lies and hatred all day long. And they spend very little time defending themselves. Its pitiful.
The ironic thing is that real liberal values are probably more in line with the average THR member than GOP values.

I'm sorry, this entire thing is fantasy. First off we aren't talking about "liberals" here, we're talking about leftists. There are no Liberals in the US today. The Founders were Liberals and there are none like them now. We have the leadership and hard-core supporters of the Dem Party, socialists to one degree or another, and the Followers, who know only that the Dem rhetoric "feels" good and they might get some free money to boot.

The lies and hatred are spewed almost non-stop by the left, who created and maintain the original propaganda machine. The level of vitriol that flows from everything from Big Media to every sorry little BB online like DU and Phlog and the rest knows no equivalent among conservatives and libertarians. The left can't "stoop to" conservative levels. They'd need a ladder truck to rise to those levels.

And baby murder, victim disarmament, tax increases, land grabs, globalization, Agenda21, prefernces based on race, gender and orientation, etc are the values of mainstream America and THR specifically? Hmm, funny, seems the Party of these issues hasn't been doing very well the past 10 years or so to be so "representative". Especially considering how much time they spend defending(Spinning) their marginal views and slandering everyone that doesn't think like them.

So tell me again how the "liberal" Democrats are out to get my guns, while the upright and virtuous conservative Republicans are protecting my liberties.
Tell it all brother, tell it all!
(For you non-Southerners, that is what an old time Baptist church-goer would shout everytime his preacher made a great point). ;)

The Yale conference was really an exercise in futility for liberals. Their biggest difficulty is getting people to actually vote for what they want....the courts or a constitutional convention is their only hope.

As was noted in other commentary:

The whole problem, from the liberal perspective, is that they can't get democratically elected bodies to enact their agenda. As one of the Yale conference participants said: "We don't have much choice other than to believe deeply in the courts--where else do we turn?"

Also,

Don't drive yourselves crazy comparing Democrats to Republicans. I'm almost 60, and the current crop of Republicans is to the left of where the Democrats were 40 years ago. To call some current Republicans conservatives would have gotten you laughed out of town not too many decades ago.

Hopefully the Dims will shake off the rabid left wing of their party. We need more than one choice...not just one left-leaning Republican choice and a bunch of Moveon.org types screaming from over the left horizon that Bush lied.

"Liberal" Democrats are indeed out to get your guns...that fact doesn't mean that the Republicans are not out to get your guns also.

As for your being offended by the derogatory term of "liberal", I am truly sorry. The original "Liberals" were indeed Patriots. The "liberals" of today ( actually leftists) have unfortunately hijacked their name. Your offense should be directed at them.
