What Makes for A Great Range Day?

Bought a FN-49 many years ago. Had fired two rounds through rifle, sitting at bench, with my two buddies observing beside me. They had just walked away when the rifle fired out of battery and splattered brass fragments up and back, taking off my cap and embedding a small piece in my scalp. I was dazed for second and then came around and searched for the problem. The bullet was gone down the barrel, but just about half of the brass was left. The bottom part, rim, and about 1" was vaporized. With me sitting behind the rifle I was somewhat shielded but if my buddies had stayed where they had been, the blow back would have been in their faces. The fact they'd walked away made that the best day at the range for me. I have been leery of surplus rifle ever since.

I am so glad and lucky I don't have to go to a range and have people on either side of me shooting, usually most are weekend shooters. I got some shots in my pastures that allow 800 yard or more shots and get to see just good my guns are on when I see a hog or coyote way out there, take my range finder out and take a shot. as much as my rifles rattle around in my truck or jeep, they stay right on target.....get to shoot everyday as much as I want....no limits on my "range"

There are 2 specific moments that I think of when I think of the "best day at the range ever."

The first is when I took a shotgun class with Chris Costa, and on the last day of the class, before lunch, we had to run a shooting drill for time, with the entire class watching. I wasnt exactly the best shooter in the class of about 20. I was # 10 to go up, and I ended up shooting the fastest time out of anyone that had shot previously, and I ran it clean. Of course, the next five people that went up after me shot faster, but Id say that was still some pretty good improvement.

Hands down, my favorite single moment at the range though, was teaching a friend of mine to shoot for the first time. It was cold and kind of rainy, but she took to it like a duck to... Something that would come naturally to a duck...

She went in worried about being able to control recoil, and by the end of the day, she was running that 870 like a boss!

When my friends and I have the range to ourselves (happens every now and then) that always makes for a good day.
Going home with more brass than I left with is always a great thing.
Every great now and then when all the stars line up and I pull off that elusive one hole group, that really makes for good times.

However, even if none of those come to fruition its hard to make a range day bad.

Had a great range day Christmas afternoon, 2 coyotes at almost 200 yards and a hog at about 100, my old Remington 788 .308 is really dead on. cold and rainy today, will hit the "range" again tomorrow.
