Enough of these pistols have blanketed the entire world in the hands of military/police and private ownership. They remain in use to this day. Still seems the primary lifetaker in the USA.
Mass executions by pistol wouldn't have been as numerous as other methods IMHO, rifle, machinegun, bayonet, starvation, physical means are much more prevalent.
Pistols were and always will be a status symbol, those with status don't like doing the dirtywork.
