So, I'm in the market for some Crimson Trace lasergrips for my 642 and want to see what yall are using. I think I'm leaning toward the 305s. Anybody seen the new 405s yet? Wish I could just feel them both out but don't think I'll have that opportunity so I'll have to rely on the forum.

This is a 640-1 the grips are the 205's I believe.
The backstrap and the bottom of the pistol frame are exposed.

They work well for pocket carry.
They have a little more bulk(palm swell) than some of the wooden boot grips etc. like from Spegel and Badger, thus with the checkering, they offer a pretty good grip on the pistol.

They are hard (plastic, nylon) etc. and don't catch on clothes.
From what I hear the newer 305's are softer, and more grabby, and longer.

They would be more comfortable to shoot, but give up some for concealability.

Hope this helps.

Most people who are going to pocket-carry like the 205's (which, I believe are no longer being produced). As you see in the pic above, the 205 is a true boot-grip size. It's hard plastic material doesn't catch on shirt/pocket material, and provides as good a grip as any wood grip. I have 30x style on other guns - that material is softer & provides better recoil absorption.

I have 305's on my 340SC . . . the rubber covering on the backstrap helps a lot when firing .357s. There's only about 1/4" of added material at the bottom of the grip, so it has no noticeable effect on "pocket carry."

I got this off the Crimson Trace forum. It sounds like the Lg-405's may be worth waiting for for my 638.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: January 27, 2006

Introducing The New Ultimate Concealable-Carry J-Frame Lasergrip®, The LG-405
Beaverton, OR — January 27, 2006: Crimson Trace announces the latest advancement in J-frame Lasergrip technology for the Smith & Wesson small J-frame revolver to be available in early 2006. The new Model, LG-405, offers the most ergonomic and slimmest grip ever designed with the advantage of a built-in laser with the proven performance you’ve come to expect from Crimson Trace.
In the past, Crimson Trace provided two options for the S&W J-frame. The hard polymer Lasergrips, (LG-205) for ease of draw from deep concealment, or the more comfortable LG-305 that offers a rubber over molded construction for comfort during extended shooting sessions. With the new LG-405, you get the advantages of both.
The LG-405 features recoil-reducing rubber on both the front strap and the back strap while including a proprietary hard polymer for both side panels of the grip. A revolutionary airspace is located in the backstrap so when the recoil hits, it is reduced by the rubber backstrap giving a little into that air space, much like a car’s shock absorber. This latest advancement makes shooting a lightweight Scandium frame .357 feel more like a .38 special.
The new LG-405 features innovations over the current offerings by using an integrated one-piece design for easy installation, snap-in battery retainers, generous relief in the side panels to facilitate speed loaders and a master power switch. The Lasergrips are sighted in for 50 feet at the factory but can be zeroed in at different distances by using the windage and elevation adjustments.
Patented Lasergrips, the world’s only grip-integrated laser sight system, incorporate a laser sight and pressure-sensitive activation switch in the ergonomically designed grip. The LG-405 utilizes a front activated, rubber-overmolded switch to turn on the laser’s bright, steady beam when the firearm is held in a normal firing grip. No other laser sighting system has this “instinctive activation” feature. Lasergrips are precision engineered to exacting specifications and made in the U.S.A. using the highest quality components and craftsmanship.
MSRP will be $299.00.
Crimson Trace is the world’s only manufacturer of grip-integrated laser sighting systems. Police, all branches of the U.S. Military, and responsible citizen’s worldwide use patented Lasergrips. Crimson Trace Lasergrips are recommended as an essential accessory by some of the world’s top firearm trainers. I’ve got the 205’s on mine. I like the minimal size and the hard plastic material doesn't catch on clothing. Too bad they are discontinuing them.

My wife bought a 642 that came with CT laser grips installed at the factiry, but I don't know what model number they are. The grip has the S&W logo, but they are CT grips.
