looking ta muzzleloaders and dont want to drop $400+

i know-get the tc, but budget

looking at a winchester apex-which i can get for $229

what else should i look at, id spend $300

Long gun? Pistol?

Hunting? Just shooting?

If it's hunting, hunting WHAT? Got to be a bit more specific dude.

Buy a used Lymans Great Plains or a used TC at a Rendezvous. You can spend about $300 for it if you make your own accoutrements (powder horn, powder measure, ball starter). That's fun and easy.

I know it's not traditional, but you can find Remington 700ML muzzleloaders online for less than $300. I have one and it's a sweet shooter. With the 209 shotgun primer kit, you can shoot upwards of 150grs of powder. I don't have that kit, so my load is 100gr in Pyrodex pellets with a 300gr sabot. Locktime is as fast as a centerfire rifle. If you have Remington rifles already, this one will feel just like your Remington centerfire rifles.

Well it depends if you're looking for a traditional sidelock or an inline. If you are going for a traditional sidelock I'll have to second Stickjockey's vote for the Lyman Great Plains Rifle or the Great Plains Hunter. The difference in the two being rate of twist with the GPH having a faster twist rate for conical bullets.
I got mine last Christmas from http://www.midsouthshooterssupply.com for a song.
If you're more into the inlines I'm sure you'll be able to find what you're looking for within your budget there also.
I would also recommend getting whatever type you choose in .54 caliber to maximize your load/projectile choices. With an inline you can shoot various combinations of sabot/subcaliber rounds to extend your range/flatten trajectory. Or you can shoot full caliber projectiles that carry a lot more whomp with them.
If you opt for the Lyman GPR (with 1:66" twist barrel) you'll be restricted to shooting patched roundballs only. Nothing wrong with patched round balls. If there were, Lewis and Clark would have never been heard from again, and the North American continent would still be owned by the Indians and buffalo herds.

Well, I have one of these (link) that I ordered to go deer hunting with this season but because of some mishaps with the shipping (surprise) I didn't receive it in time to use it and ended up using a buddies instead. It's still brand new in the Cabela's shipping box with a scope that I'd be willing to sell. Lemme know if you are interested.

.45 or .50? How much?

It's .50 caliber and I could probably let it go for 170 plus shipping. Like I said, it's not even out of the Cabela's shipping box yet, so it's still brand spanking new.

Get something light - I was hunting today with a friend who had one of those new in-line muzzle loaders with a synthetic stock. I was carrying my old TC Hawken (54 caliber) and when I lifted his it felt like a feather. That cannon I lug around sure gets heavy after 7 or 8 hours of hunting. We got into some nice elk but didn't get a shot, they were ahead of us going downhill pretty fast - we got close enough to smell them but I haven't found a recipe for elk smell.

There is a T/C Black Diamond (.45), stainless, camo synthetic, NIB in the Bargain Cave of the Hamburg, PA Cabelas. $250. It looked pretty nice.

If you get an Apex I'd like to hear a report on it.

check out Bud's Gun Shop at www.budsgunshop.com
They have Knight's Wolverine 209 26"barrel blued .45 cal for $99+shipping
Knight's Wolverine 209 26"barrel stanless .45 cal for $169+shipping
both come with black composite stock.
I wanted a .50 cal but for this price I am really close to trying the .45 cal. I want to be able to shoot 150-175 yds at white tails.

Gofer is right - looks at Buds. They also have T/C Omega's with laminated stock and SS bbl for $354. A little more than you want to spend, but the cheapest I've seen them. I just bought one locally last week for $409 and thought I got a very good deal compared to other shops in my area. This is a great rifle and if you can swing it you won't be disappointed. If too much money, then I suggest looking at Bud's other offerings.

The Omega gets great reviews, and the little shooting I've done so far suggests it's an extremely accurate rifle, and I haven't done any load testing yet.

Enjoy!

Last week I picked up a TC Black Diamond "package" (a lot of other stuff) at Walmart for $170. The fellow at the counter said they were getting rid of them, and that they'd paid over $220 for them. Cheapest I'd seen them before this was $270.

Something to consider before buying a ML is what are the hunting regulations where you'll be using it. Here in Idaho I'm restricted to musket caps or #11 caps for ignition (this eliminates many rifles) and no scope.

and for a bigger boom

Enfield P1853 .58 Cal

I went ahead and got this for reenacting but its just so much fun for hunting, and the .58 conicals are guarronteed kills here in SC.

I bought a TC Lock and stock off ebay for $50. Then a GM .58 cal. 1 in 70"twist bbl for about $160. $210 total.
