Well let's see, I guess I would go with a Smith & Wesson M&P 40. These particular pistols seem vey ruggedly built and would more than likely stand up to the rigors of warfare.
Forgive me if I don't fully understand today's modern military, but if I were drafted and had to go to war, wouldn't they issue me the guns I was supposed to take?
Or was that a figure of speech, and you didn't literally mean "go to war?" Anyway, the US would have to be in dire straits indeed if they wanted me to do anything other than work a desk in the rear echelons.
I believe the OP was attempting to bring about a conversation about combat pistols and what others might feel we're a good choice. I could be wrong however.
There is only one choice - the Government model 1911. It, like the Ma Deuce, has worked as intended for over a century of warfare, and there is nothing better. Pull the trigger, it goes bang, and a big hole appears in the target. Been there, saw the elephant, and blew a bunch of big bloody holes in it that allowed me to GMTFO there.
Honestly, in mixed/ multinational teams, the biggest worry is that we're not all carrying the same thing. If everyone else has a Belgian 9, I want what they've got. ESPECIALLY if they have hi powers.... those are nicer than our m9s IMO.
Assuming plentiful ammo, my S&W Model 19. Not too bulky, I shoot it nearly as well as my Model 28. But since 9mm is so plentiful, probably my CZ-75, or perhaps a Browning HiPower.
Honestly though, I'd rather have an extra mag for my rifle, with perhaps a little 5 shot S&W J frame in a pants pocket for last ditch.
A no frills 1911, built loose enough that a little dirt won't hurt, but tight enough that it's not going to shake itself apart or shoot way off point of aim.
If I had to take a 9mm it would be a Hi-Power. No matter what, I want something all metal.
It depends on the situation. If it were a standardized situation where a lot of other people would likely be working in my team, I would want a Glock 17 or 19. If it were the situation I just came home from, I would much rather have had my Kimber Custom II than my issued M-9. NOW, if I had to go back to the same situation, I would take the commemorative Para I just bought. Double-stack, ambidextrous safety, coyote tan with black grips, markings for my unit, and five 14-rd magazines. I would even be fine with hardball ammo. I would take 500 rounds on my own and call it good.
I've never been to war. I hope to never have to. If push came right on down to shove I suppose I'd want an H&K USP.45 and 2-3 hi cap mags. That way I'd have enough ammo to get me out of the extreme CQB I'd be in. It seems to me that pistols are a last ditch personal defense weapon, and not particularly effective general combat firearm. Just my 2c.
