What pistols do you think of when you hear "Legendary"

When I think "Legendary", I think of pistols so famous that even non shooters have heard of them.

Two immediately come to mind. Both can be called the "Colt .45". The first is the M1873 Single Action Army, the second is the M1911/M1911A1 automatic pistol.

"Colt .45" is so well entrenched in the popular vernacular that there's even a liquor brand named after it.

Also, amongst legendary pistols, you have the Luger P-08 "Parabellum" and the Desert Eagle. The latter was popularized in countless movies and video games due to its large size and cool appearance; it's fame is based more on aesthetics than actual performance or history.

Lugers
Colt SAA
1911's
Browning High Powers

or anything that is still being built for more than 50 years

any Deringer
Harper's Ferry Percussion 58 cal with the attached ramrod
Patterson
Walker
1851 navy
1861 army
1863???? remington
1873 Cavalry
S&W M&P
S&W triplelock
1903 pocket colt
1908 luger
1911
BHP
S&W Magnum
S&W Combat Magnum Model 19

Glock... Urban legend maybe but still first and formost drastic plastic

Is that enough???

I would respectfully add the S&W "Registered Magnum" (in .457 magnum), leading to all N Frame 27s, 28s, 627s, and so forth.

Wow! Where can I get a .457 magnum?

:D :D
Kidding, but it was too hard to keep resisting.

Both the big Colt .45s, as N/C and Thirdrail, and others correctly said. Also, the Luger and maybe the big S&W Magnums. That's about it.

You have to put the S&W Model 60 on the list.

This is where stainless steel (whether you like it or not) started. The fact that it sold for years at prices well above list is confirmation of its status...and the fact that it's still in the lineup after almost 40 years.

Legendary... based on internet myths? The Glock, 1911 and "Saturday Night Special."

Legedary... based on history? the SAA, SW Model 10, Colt 1911 and M1911A1, and BHP.

Legendary... based on film/TV... the PPK, The Luger, The Model 29.

Sorry Peteer, but if someone's not a historically oriented gun person, they probably not even heard of the Sig 210, regardless of its quality and engineering. After all, it rarely got very far past Switzerland.

The voices in my head go along with the .45 Colt (1911 and Peacemaker) crowd. I'll add the Luger and the Broomhandle.

I like the BHP, but it doesn't hang in there like the abovementioned.

History: Luger, Colt .45 SAA and 1911
TVidiots: Deagle, PPK, S&W 629 .44mag

BHP just doesn't have a huge mythos, what eddie muphy carried it in Beverly Hills cop, big deal and nobody really cares about it's record with britain and the commonwealth.

Legendary pistols in order of appearance:

Colt Walker
Colt Dragoon
Colt 1851 Navy
Colt 1873 Peacemaker
Colt 1911
Luger
BHP

Others were pretty significant, but none have/had the reputations of the above.
Hmmmmm...........Colt's lead the list. Too bad the company evolved into what it is today.:(

Glock

BWHAAHAHAHAHA

I'm sorry, I couldn't resist. Anybody see the ad in American Rifleman that said "Why get a BLOCK when you can have a KAHR?" I loved the picture of the big block of knotty wood at the top of the ad.

Okay, seriously, I'd start off the list with the 1911, the BHP, the Registered Magnum and the Python. And the Single-Six and the Mark I. And the SAA. And the Dirty Harry gun. :)

John

I agree with all of the above. I would add the Colt DA 38 in Army or Navy form. TR carried one. I own one. The Colt/S&W 1917s in 45 ACP might be legendary.
