I am looking at my Lyman 48th edition reloading book. I am trying to figure out what powder to stat with to reload my .45 auto. In the book it gives you the name of some of the recommended powders to start with. Like Bullseye, Unique and a few more. But Gander Mt dose not sell these brands. And I don’t see them on on-line places like Powder Valley. How do I know what to use for powder if I can’t find the brand the book tells me to use. Thanks

Never mind, I see the Alliant makes the powdwer and has many different names under the Alliant brand.

700X, 231, and Bullseye for target and Unique for heftier loads. I know there are other good ones but those are the ones I use and am familiar with. Quantrill

Do yourself a big favor

and get the free manuals that the powder companies give out. Rather than chasing around a bunch of manuals trying to find your powder, you buy a powder and see all the applications it has

As for powder, there was a thread here just a week or two ago. Change your setting to 30 days and you should be able to pick it up

Accurate 5, Titegroup, WW-231, Universal Clays, and Bullseye are the answers

I highly recommend consulting three or four reloading manuals before starting to reload. As for powders useful in the 45 ACP, Bullseye, W-231 (HP-38), AA#2 improved are good for light target loads and peak out near factory 230 grain ballistics. For full power loads Unique and AA#5 are hard to beat.

Powders for .45 acp

Bullseye makes for very accurate loads, and its recoil seems less than other powders I have tried. I use 5 grns with 230 gr. FMJ & 4.1 - 4.3 with 185 gr LSWC. Another I have used a great deal is Green Dot- 5.2 grns w/ 230 FMJ. :)

I gotta go with Ala D. on this one. I use almost the same load but a little lighter. 4.8 of Universal C's under a 200gr LSWC. Fired from a ... Sig 220 of course! People at the range cannot believe it's a .45. I don't know how to describe how mild it is to shoot. Well, sweet, like AD said. It is a fantastic tool for trigger control, sight pic, double taps, etc. It is sooo mild that I always end the session with a few mags of full power loads. I use Uni Clays for my mild .44 mag loads also. Make sure you don't confuse it with regular Clays.
