i will tell u a little about myself

i grow up hunting with my dad but i was just to young to really shot anything to big and then we stop hunting for a little while and my dad pasted when i was 16 so i havent got to hunt very much and injoy shooting guns, hunting, and info on firearms. i grow up around it and i know about safty and i have shot guns. just never went with friends because it was me and my dads deal.
anyways i want to start back up. i have done some research and i have
picked the remington 700.

VTR i think i know what yall are going to say about this one there was a thread on it, but don't know if there is any new info some ppl would like to share i like the look of the gun but just think it will be to loud and my want to surpress it later

XCR compact don't think i will benfit from a compact, its just smaller right X-Mark Pro™ muzzle brake looks cool but don't think i will like it
XCR TriNyte® X-Mark Pro™PVD coating and i am guessing that the xcr will be replacing the ltr pros and cons compared to other 700
SPS pros and cons compared to other 700
LTR pros and cons compared to other 700
LTR TWS this will be the closest thing i can get to the usr if i can not get it
USR can u buy this gun because this is what i want in the end or do u have to work for the gov/mili

i am sorry guys i have been doing some research but just don't have the time

and as for the USR can civilians buy it or can i get a mil friend get it for me

sorry to be so ignorant

chris

I saw the VTR at a gun shop last night. The triangle barrel looked much better than I thought and the muzzle brake was well done. The stock was not that great in my opinion but I am spoiled by the HS Precision stock on my VS.

I think for the money the VTR will make a fine hunting/target combo rifle.

ok so there is nothign better than the other but the new finish and trigger and length

There are no restrictions on private ownership. You'll just have to order it, or have your dealer order it for you, through a Remington LE distributor. Their LE guns are indeed different, in that they're built in their own secure area of the factory, and they undergo more thorough and rigorous inspections than the sporting guns. On a Remington 700 rifle this is less of an issue. On their Police model shotguns they do change things like shell lifter springs, and mag tube springs knowing that those shotguns will be kept loaded and used almost exclusively with heavy loads. With .308 rifles you don't have near the variance in loads you can run into with a shotgun.

One thing to consider

Remmy 700's are very good guns with one flaw, major flaw IMO. the extractor is poor and prone to breaking and failure to remove spent ammo. I would look at something with a claw extractor.

They are weaker than say a Mauser but I have owned a couple 700's and my friends have them. Never seen one break.

You can have them upgraded to a Mauser style extractor but I personally don't think it's needed on a short action.

"Remmy 700's are very good guns with one flaw"

Might be but I own several--including a 1950's Mod 721 and have never had a problem with any of them. The triggers are/were the best in a factory rifle IMHO. I use my guns and many are used in informal and formal competition.

The key is the stock. Cheaper 700's have cheaper stocks. That may or may not be unacceptable depending on you.

I used to not care, but the stock is a critical part of the accuracy game and has other advantages. A gun needs a solid stock.

There's two ways to go with a Remington. Spend the money and get everything up front, or buy the cheapest and upgrade. Probably better to buy the cheapest and upgrade like I did (SPS Tactical). The barrels and actions are all identical, but you save a few hundred dollars that buys you a quality stock and a much better trigger. In the end, you'll have a better rifle.

Remington 700 5R Mil R5 308 i like this one but can u get the barriel in black

or

LTR

700P SS R5 .308 Win. Barrel Length 24' Standard Twist 11.25'
so ur paying for the barrel (SS) i really don't like the barrel because of the ss and the twist right know the reason i say that is thst they don't make any other guns with this twist

and out of those to what would u pick

so ur saying get the sps tactical
change stock
change trigger

stock i have no clue what to look for just want it simple no wood something light and black

trigger so u don't like the X-Mark Pro Trigger

I had the same problem as you did, not sure which model 700 to get. After realizing what I wanted, I decided to look into something else and ended up with a Savage 10FCP HS.

If you want a different stock or trigger or whatever, its going to be either spend the money now or later.

Is this mainly going to be for hunting? if so what will you be hunting? Paper punching? What kind of distance are you looking to get?

You really need to decide what purpose you will be using it for before making a decision so you can start off on the right platform.

But the cheapest 700. Then throw away the cheap injection molded plastic stock and buy a Bell and Carlson Medalist stock from Midwayusa.com for $240. The rifle will serve a lifetime.

For getting back into shooting/hunting, the SPS's are a good value and there's a good selection of them out there i.e. blued, stainless, heavy barrel, sporter barrel, in plenty of different chamberings. Also, every one I've ever seen was a shooter.

this is it thanks guy i have been reading reviews and this is what will be great for me

searcy1321, I just found this thread and I am facing the same question you had. I was looking at the 700P in both barrel lengths and ditto for the XCR. Did you get your XCR yet and if so how do you like it?
