I'm not fixated on any one particular cartridge, which one I use (an inventory that includes the .257 Roberts, the .257 Weatherby Magnum, the 30-30 Winchester, the 45-70 Government, the .308 Winchester, the 7x64 Brenneke and the 30-06 Springfield) depends somewhat on where I'm hunting at, plains or heavy timber; scope or receiver sight, etc. For the last few years when hunting in Michigan cedar swamps and Pennsylvania forested cover for whitetails, I've been more than satisfied using a Savage Model 99, chambered in .358 Winchester (using 200 grain "SilverTips"), with a Redfield 1.5X5 "WideField" mounted on it. But I could just about use any of the afore-mentioned rifles most places where I hunt with no problem (though my peep-sighted 30-30 and 45-70 rifles are a little more habitat specific).
