Just curious what you guys and gals are using for deer, hogs and/or black bear. Maybe you only hunt deer, maybe you hunt deer and hogs, maybe you hunt deer and black bear, maybe you hunt all three and more.

I'm on the three gun plan for deer, hogs and black bear.

1- My main gun for 2 to 200 yard hunting is a Remington 7600 carbine 30-06 Spr. with a Leupold VX-II 2-7x33mm Scope.

2- My open sight gun for thick brush, deep woods and still hunting where my shots will most likely be 75/100 yards max is Marlin 336C 35 Rem. with XS Ghost Ring Sights.

3- My long range gun for watching fields or where my shots may be longer then 200 yards is a Remington 700 Classic 280 Rem. with a Redfield Tracker 3-9x40mm Scope.

The 7600 will be used 75% of the time. The 336C will be used pretty much the rest of the time. The 700 will be used every once in a while. I hunt mostly in the woods so 200 yard plus shots are rare.

NYH1! ;)

Ruger 77/44 - .44 Magnum with a 1-4X scope for under 100yds in brush (deer).

Ruger No. 1 -.30-06 Springfield with a 3-9X scope for more open country (deer).

REM 760 30-06 Nikon Monarch 180 grain Barnes MRX Deer and hogs 0 to 300 yds

Marlin 444 irons 240 grain JWC Deer and hogs in heavy brush

REM 700 sps COYOTE SPECIAL 45 grain BARNES TSX Coyotes rabbits crows turkeys

SP2340 Irons Side Arm

There may be better combos for your area but this works well in mine which is a mix of planted pines ,swamps and clear cuts.

NYH, your 30-06 will do all the above just fine. I use a 700 in 30-06 for deer hunting in FL and in TX, and the shots are different distances. A good variable scope like a Leupold will allow fast acquisition under low power and cranked up will get 300 yards easily.

I prefer scopes for deer hunting, even in close range, so I can examine the antlers to make sure I want to shoot him. It's part of being ethical.

Ive got am ok spread of guns for deer, goat, and pigs....no bear

If i HAVE to make a kill ill usually go for my 700sps in 7mm remington sporting a simmons wtc 6.5-20. It used to skip the last round but after getting that, and a few other quirks worked out it IS my go to rifle.

If im not looking for meat and in heavy brush, ill probably take my mini as its the smallest gun i own. Open it up to 250-300yds or so and it would probably be my 700adl in 6x47, add any more range or body size over 150lbs and it goes to the .30-06 1903, .243 savage 11, or .300win savage 110.

I havent tried my nagant yet as its big, heavy, and big.....tho i guess my 7mm is only slightly shorter and quite a bit heavier.

12 gauge shotgun or .50 cal muzzle loader.. My area of Michigan doesn't allow centerfire rifle hunting. :(

If I go up north, I'm taking my Mosin M-44.

Hunting is something we do for fun. I firmly believe in hunting with guns YOU enjoy hunting with. The guns you are using are certainly capable of doing the jobs you have assigned to them.

I would use the same rifle for all tasks. The exact rifle or caliber matters little. A 270, 308, 280, or 30-06 would work just fine as would at least a dozen other chamberings. Having 1 great gun is cheaper than 3-4 good guns. Shooting the same gun under all conditions means you know it and shoot it better.

I'd pick a lightweight bolt rifle weighing close to 7 lbs. or slightly less including a good 2-7 or 3-9 scope. I'm good from 4 yards to 400 on any of the animals listed. At 7 lbs., I'm lighter and handier than either the pump or lever action. I can pick up targets quicker for snap shots with a scope set on 2 or 3X than with irons and can work the bolt gun just as fast as a lever if repeat shots are needed. Probably can't keep up with a pump, but would be closer than you'd think.

If I was planning a trip for all three I would likely go with a single gun, my Browning BAR in 375/338. I have shot it at near touching distance out to 200 yards and it has proven it's accuracy and reliability. The fact I can duplicate 375 H&H ballistics is a plus as well.

First fiream for hunting was a 12 ga 28" barrel pump. good deer killer. When I was going just pig hunting it was with a 357mag shooting 180gr hardcast. That worked very well for 20 years. My first deer rifle is a rem 788 in .308. 35 years later it still a great rifle and it gets used in mainly bottom or closer in hunting now. If hunting clear cuts a custon ruger 7 rem mag.
In todays world it way more archery hunting.

I choose to use a rifle and cartridge that works for EVERYTHING that i hunt. I just don't need this rifle for brush hunting and something else for 200 yard shots...

This way, i'm ready for anything that i see within 300 yards, no matter where i hunt. Numerous cartridges will do this, but i choose to use an 8x57 loaded with 200NP's at 2,550fps.

I've harvested everything from moose and bear on down to deer and havolina with my combo, and it has worked perfectly for me.

What I had, and used...

Winchester Model 94 in 30-30 being in the South, and often times dense, brush settings.

Winchester Model 70 in '06 for more open areas, longer distance.

Shotgun with slugs, was something I grew up with just being too handy not to have, to deal with so much.

Winchester 94, .30-30, peep sight for everything up to 100 yards. Marlin XS7 in 7mm-08 with a Weaver K4 for beyond that. If it's too long for that, I won't shoot.

For close in work (shots not to exceed 100yds) and very thick vegitation areas Marlin 1894SS .44 mag.

For hunting were shots can be out to 250yd Marlin 336A with Hornady LE ammo. Most often though I hunt with 150gr Fed Fusion ammo as all of my game has been taken inside 150yds.

NYH1, I'd say you have all the bases covered. That's a VERY nice set of rifles in what I consider ideal calibers.

I use an FR-8 Mauser Scout rifle with a 2.75X Burris in .308 for just about all my deer and hog hunting. In situations where I could face a shot say over 250 yds my old Ruger 77 in .280 gets the nod.
Though I own a couple dozen centerfire rifles including bolts, levers and semi's those two are the ones I find myself using most. I could probably do it all with one rifle, but that'd be boring. Variety, as they say, is the spice of life!

I own three hunting rifles:

Rem 700 in 30-06 with Leupold fixed 4X scope.

Marlin 336 lever action in 30-30 with Leupold 2.5x fixed scout scope.

Marlin 1895 lever action in 45-70 with ghost ring sights.

If I didn't like my lever actions, the one bolt action would do me just fine.

1- My main gun for 2 to 200 yard hunting is a Bushmater BAR-10

2- My gun for thick brush, deep woods and still hunting where my shots will most likely be 75/100 yards max is a Bushmaster BAR-10

3- My long range gun for watching fields or where my shots may be longer then 200 yards is a Bushmaster BAR-10

While I may use othe guns for S&G my main meat getter is.... you guessed it; the BAR-10!

Forgot to add, my home county is shotgun, muzzle loader or handgun. Centerfire rifles aren't allowed. The few times a year I hunt here I use my Remington 11-87 Sportsman deer 12 ga. It has a 21" rifled barrel with the cantilever scope mount. I have to get another scope for it. Probably go with a Leupold Shotgun Scope. The counties to the north, south and east of me are allow rifles so I hunt in one of them. . . . .I hate using a slug gun!

Little 44 Puma on the left shoots real nice out to about 100 yards or so. The big boy on the right hits em like a giant fist from god. Nothing moves after 430 grains at 1750 fps!

All good choices.

My go-to rifle is a pre-64 Winchester Model 70 in .30-06. On horseback, I carry a Winchester Model 94 in .30-30 with a Williams 5D peep sight.

In addition to those two, I occasionally use a 6.5X55 Swedish Mauser with a 3X9 scope (mine was sporterized by Kimber) and a .30-40 Krag with a cocking piece sight.

I take my Marlin 1895SBL for walking through thick stuff. No scope needed.

For fields or stands I take my Savage in 260Rem topped with a Vortex 4-12x40 scope. Those two cover everything for me.

I just bought a POF*USA P-308 for targets that can do the job of both, scoped or irons, and I plan to take it out this year.

When I'm feeling lucky I go out with just my Ruger Bisley. Apparently I'm not a good stalker as I haven't gotten anything with it yet.

Nice ideas ladies and gents. I used to have a rifle for every conceivable situation, but have long since decided to go another route.

My go-to rifle for the critters you mentioned and then some. Any terrain in North America...... and at the various distances mentioned, provided the conditions are favorable for a clean shot with a safe backdrop.

Sometimes I use the iron sights, and sometimes I mount a scope to the Arms #18 mount. (Depends on my mood, what I'm hunting, and where I'm hunting for the most part)

I enjoy shooting this rifle and a few others similar to this specific rifle, so it makes for the best hunting rifle for me, even though there are rifles in same caliber out there that weigh less. I simply decided to grow stronger instead:)

Have taken hogs with it from up close on out to 387yds. Placing the shot exactly where I want it to go is the #1 priority, and this is the rifle that allows me the best way to do that, as I like it enough to sell off most of my other..."more dedicated" hunting rifles...... among a host of others that I quit using.

This will be my next medium/big game slayer.......

...... when I get a chance to evaluate said rifle.
