What rifle were you issued in basic training?

Well, the first time I went thru basic (SEP 89), I was issued an M-16A2 until after BRM (Basic Rifle Marksmanship), then we were given A1's.

After 2 years, I got out and spent 5 years as a civilian before reenlisting. This time (NOV 91) we were issued M-16A2's for the whole cycle.

The first time around, there were only so many A2's in the inventory, so they were rotated around the Basic training companies for qualification.

M-14, I loved that gun, certified expert with one shot at the range. A crow landed in my lane about 150 yards down line just before shooting started, DI told me if I got him he would certify me as expert with out having to shoot the rest of the targets. I fired one round when the firing started. They called a stop shooting and my DI ran down the lane. He bent over and picked up a wing and part of a body. He loved it, was laughing the rest of certification. Thats my one shot certification.

People got to play with guns in bootcamp?

:)
We fired 6 rounds through a 1911 in bootcamp and didn't touch a firearm again until reported aboard a submarine. On the submarine, we used the Colt M16A1, Remington 870 and Colt 1911.

At Navy boot camp in 1973-74 we were issued M1s for drill and marching, but only ever shot some 22 bolt actions the ONE DAY we went to the range. Bummer! They were trying a 9 week "accelerated" boot camp at the time.

I later qualified with the M14 and M1911A1 ON MY OWN TIME while stationed at NavComSta Ft. Allen, Ponce, Puerto Rico in '76-'77. I also had a nice Model 12 for Quick Reaction Team assignments on shipboard tours but we only shot them once a year during the annual "Use Up The Ten Year Old Ammo Day" out at sea using trash for targets (also my only time firing an M60 and an M16.)

July '88 with an M16A1 with a hole in the gas tube..they never did repair or replace it during my cycle. 19 weeks of OSUT and I basically had a straight-pull bolt action rifle. Not a very impressive introduction to the '16.

We're not all Americans you know... :D

I was issued a G3 (Kongsberg-made) the first day in basic training, while still in civilian clothes. "Learn the serial number and look after it. If you loose it, you're in trouble."

In my outfit we didn't have designated machinegunners, so we all had to take turns lugging the squad's MG3 around, something that gets boring pretty fast when you have to carry your G3 as well.

At "Benning School for Boys" I was issued a GM Turbo Hydro-matic Division M16A1. Man, was that thing put through the mill before I got it!!!! Not much finish left on her when I got it.......but she shot true.

No doubt in my mind it saw the jungles of SEA.

Cheers,
Mike

Ft Lostinthewoods, Misery. M1. We were the last basic training group to use the m1, the next class got the M14.

Our designated MG3 gunner didn't have to tote a G3, so that wasn't so bad. Our "squad tar baby" was the le Pzf 44mm, better known as the Panzerfaust. Just as heavy as the MG3, but much more bulky around and correspondingly more difficult to carry. If you got stuck with it, you had to drag both the Pzf44 and your G3 around, which was a bit of a drag.
