What rifle would you recommend?

Dr Tad and arsuf are on the right track here; I'll throw in a 7.08 as well.
also I would look old school- remmy 788 or remmy 600/660/mohawk.
I'll throw in a remmy mod 7 and mossberg superbantam for kids.
and I'll throw in a ruger hawkeye...

Just to clarify my original post:

When I said "no featherweights" I was refering to the weight and size of the gun, not to the caliber.

One other clarification, did $750 include optics or was it strictly for the rifle? It really cuts my budget for rifle almost in half if you are looking to get optics in the $750.

what no Marlins?

xs7 7mm08,243,or 308 . xl7 25 06,30 06, 270 all come with that new trigger similar to accu trigger, all getting good reports. less money than remington and better gun. {this is a personal observation, not meant to set any one on rave just personal experiance}

The term, "you can't have your cake and eat it too" applies to firearms as much as anything else. He wants it to be able to take a wide variety of game, so I assume elk and maybe moose are on the agenda. If they're not, and game the size of whitetails are all that will be hunted, I would say something in the .260 rem, 7mm-08 range would be the ticket. Recoil isn't that big an issue with either. If indeed elk or moose are on the list, then a .30-06 would be the ticket. You could go with Remington reduced recoil ammo or load em down if you handload, for the target shooting. Hunting big game with the same rifle that you target shoot all day with is going to be difficult. If that's what you want, you're almost going to have to go with a marginal hunting round. That is providing the game is larger than whitetail. Just my 0.02.

a savage would be my first choice, they are inexpensive, but they are highly accurate, and they have shooteradjustable triggers, get ine in .308 would be my choice, i can shoot one all day with no ill effects, of if that is an issue look at .270

Bolt action I'd go with a Savage Model 10 or 110 in .243 or 30-06. Browning A Bolt and Marlin XL-7 are the two other bolt actions I'd check into also but more than likely I'd get the Savage unless I got a super deal on one of the others.

Semi Auto I'd go for a Browning BAR also in .243 or 30-06.

Red State (the OP) states in his second message:

"Type of game animals are not yet specified, but I would imagine it to be deer and smaller."

So a .243 is a perfectly acceptable caliber, given this probable game selection.

Yep I saw that he said the type of game wasn't known yet but would probably be deer or smaller and a 243 is enough for deer. Any bigger than deer and I'd want the 30-06.

Savage 114...30-06
Savage 14...7mm-08- Old one with the 1/9.250" twist. or 308Win.
Savage 116 and the 16 or 10/110 in the same above mentioned calibers.
Tikka T-3 Hunter or Stainless-
Browning A-Bolt, or if you like it, the X-Bolt- Ditto on the calibers.
Marlin X series, same calibers-
Remington CDL or SPS(economy)
Remington Model 7
so on and so forth.........

All these are good deer rifles...and so the calibers.

If I were your friend i would get a .243 Win Weatherby Vanguard with a Nikon ProStaff 3-9X40 scope with a BDC reticle. Don't spend 50 on rings the 10-12 dollar steel rings are fine. The whole package will run your friend about $550.00 with FFL fees incl. That will buy him 10 boxes of Remmington Core Lokt 100gr BTSP ammo. That aught to be enough to break the rifle in and get him lots of practice with it to boot!

Obviously I have one of these and I love mine! Don't let anyone tell you that .243 isn't enough gun for deer. It just ain't so. .243 is plenty. As you can see, I am not the first to recommend this caliber for deer.

Mikey!

Mike....Tikka, Marlin, Browning, but no Winchester???

Damn! Mea culp! My Bad! Let's see, what can I blame that one on....hmmm...it was late and I had just mentioned the Winchester name in another post! That's it, yeah, yeah, that's it!

By all means...Winchester, and excellent specimen of the bolt action rifle!

If the OP is looking at target shooting "all day" with a hunting rifle, the $750 budget will get surpassed VERY quickly in ammo costs. In any caliber suitable for hunting.

I agree with an above poster, get a used .22 rifle for fun shooting, and get a .308 bolt gun.

First rifle, remington 700, 308, good scope. You can use reduced recoil loads for practice (very accurate) and still be prepared for most any game. I agree with the 243 in the hands of an experienced shooter, but not a first rifle.

my suggestion....

if you want a tack driver..

If you like stainless and poly, get a Savage 16 (and make sure it's a new production rifle with the new accustock).

if you like Walnut and blue steel.... get a Savage 14

and my suggestion for cartridge would be...

7mm-08 if you re-load

.308 if you don't
