How do I find out what model a certain S&W Revolver is?

I know it's a .38
Serial #- How many number's do y'all need to tell what it is?

Thanks for your help...

M

black out the last 2 or 3 digits and that will give us an idea.

By the way, does it say on the frame behind the yoke when the cylinder is out? Does it have a name on the barrel?

Funny you should mention that...

Yup. It's a Model 10-5. (I'm slow sometimes, sorry)

Serial # is 819xx

Can you give me any more info? DOB, etc?

One side of barrel says Smith and Wesson.
Other side says 38 S&W Special CTG

Paragraph under cylinder says:
Made is USA
Marcas Registradas
Smith & Wesson
Springfield, MA

Thanks

M

Sorry I am not to "up" on the "-" guns. I can tell you it is post 57 since it is a numbered model. I would guess it is in the 70's or 80's but I am just guessing.

Good luck.

Look on the bottom of the grip frame (take off the grips if they cover that); there is the "real" serical number. On a 10-5, there should be a prefix, like "K11111xx". Post it and we'll note it.

In fact - checking again .... Models 10-4, 10-5 and 10-6 were all 1962, when small engineering and production changes were made.

By 1977 it became Model 10-7 .... so yes it means it is within the time bracket of 1962 thru 1977 ..... the S/N of course would narrow this right down. I hadn't meant earlier to state only 1962, sorry!

Your S&W model 10-5 must be one of the last in that series. The serial number is also at the end of its series. They ended in 1977 at serial number D 999999. Your revolver could have been made in late 1976, but 1977 is much more probable.
