I am going to buy a CZ 550 American in 30-06. I am willing to spend 300-600 on a good scope for it (probably a 3-9). I will be hunting in Texas, around San Antonio, so I figured I want a 3-9 power scope (that is what my relatives have suggested to me). Should I buy a nice Leopold (VX II- or III), or should I just spend the money and get a Zeiss Conquest. This will be my only rifle for a long time, so I want to buy the best quality optics I can afford the first time out, rather than upgrading later.

Thanks

Zeiss Conquest. I saw them going for $399 recently; now they are $449 for the 3-9x40. Still a very good price for premium optics and very sound engineering. There are a few pages to wade through but there is a 3-9x40 Conquest in several flavors here:

Nothing wrong with Leupold, but if you can afford it Zeiss is worth it IMO.

If you are looking at the Leupold, look only at the VXlll. The VXll is not near the quality as the VXlll. The Conquest is a very good scope. Find a gun shop that carries both brands and compare them side by side. If you live in a small town, that might not be possible though.

riflescopes.com still has the conquest 3-9x40 for 399. It is a wonderful scope.

I really like the Burris, Nikon, and Leupold 6x40mm or 6x42mm models for hunting. Simple, rugged, accurate, and easy to use. There's not much you can't do with a 6x on a .30-06 rifle.

Don,t overlook the weaver grandslams. They are a very nice scope for the money, around $269 bucks.I have three of them and they have been flawless.I also think the Bushnell elites 3200-4200 series scopes are a bargin also.frank c.

Scopes...

One word: Ebay... Tons of decent deals on Ebay for Leupold and the others. Got 2 3-9 VXIIC one for 192 delivered and in silver for 211 delivered...

Leupold VX III is my default choice for rifles with recoil in the 30-06 and greater class, because of Leupold's reputation for rugged construction coupled with acceptable optics. I would limit the Zeiss to rifles with less recoil. An exception would be where the 30-06 is built relatively heavy (long barrel, dense wood stock), and I expect to hunt in low light conditions- there I would go for the Zeiss.

In any case I would mount with Talley steel bases and rings, having had Leupold bases shoot loose on me.
