What should everybody have?

Any firearm or even an air rifle. Why

What everyone needs right now is the skill. Specific equipment can be acquired according to the situation at hand.

Eskimo Jim:

Luxuries:
A long arm and a handgun for each person in the family and possibly a Back up gun too.

I consider a sidearm per person to be essential. I'd go so far as to say it should be of major caliber, assuming the person is capable of controlling it.

Additionally, the household should have the aforementioned:

12 gauge
.22 pistol
.22 rifle
general-purpose rifle

We don't have a sidearm for every person in our family, but everyone knows how to handle every weapon we have:

Winchester Mod 12
Winchester Mod 70 30.06 scoped
Winchester Defender 12
Stevens 16
Glock 23&27
S&W 45ACP
S&W 38 snub
1911

Practice every summer out in Colorado with all weapons, and they all enjoy it.
;)

Basic needs

Every responsible person should own at least one Home Defense (Battle Rifle or carbine) we have .223 or 30 carbine or 308 for each member of the family. They all have at least one self-defense handgun 9mm or 38 special or greater. Everyone has attended at lease NRA basic rifle and basic Handgun course. Min of 500 rounds of ammo for each defensive firearm. There is a home defense shotgun but we live in the country and the rifle is much more practical.

from Jeff Cooper, When one has a rifle one turns from a subject to a citizen.

There are four serious handgun cartridges:

.22 Long Rifle -- everyone has to have a .22 pistol, for practice, targets, plinking, and hunting.

.38/357 -- these are really the same cartridge, since most .357s shoot .38s very nicely. This is perhaps the most versatile handgun ever developed.

.45 ACP -- THE defensive handgun cartridge.

.45 Colt -- properly loaded in the right gun (like a Ruger Blackhawk) it is fully the equal of the .44 Magnum

You need three rifles:

.22 Long Rifle -- same reason as you need a .22 pistol.

A "varmit" rifle -- from .22 Hornet to .223 Remington. If you are a serious varmit hunter, you probably want a "heavy" varmit rifle in a hotter cartridge.

A high-power rifle -- As Townsend Whelen used to say, "The .30-06 is never a mistake."

You need one shotgun -- a 12 gauge pump with screw-in chokes.

If you're into various games and sports, you'll need guns tailored to those games -- but the 8 I've listed here will do 99% of whatever needs to be done.

That's my story, and I'm sticking to it.:neener:

[requirement]--[example]

Rifle -- Scoped bolt action .308 or 30-06
Carbine -- 16" AR or AK
Shotgun -- Slide action 12ga
Service Pistol -- 1911 in .45ACP or S&W L-Frame in .357 Magnum
Never without it -- J-Frame
Grocery gitter -- Accurate .22 pistol
Long range grocery gitter -- Accurate .22 rifle

Something old, something new, something wood, something tacticool
:D I like!

My take as a bare minimum to fulfill one's obligations to self and community...

* one totable handgun for self defense
* one "citizen" rifle.. ideally the issue longarm of your nation

Thus, you preserve the security of a free society, and you're at least helping to keep crime under control by not being a victim. That's the baseline.

As a "good sense" minimum:
* a .22 rifle and a .22 pistol for practice and fun
* Larger "housegun" weapon -- carbine, shottie, whatever floats your boat.
* Some scoped centerfire rifle

As a "have to at least experience to call yourself an American:"
* .30-.30 lever carbine, preferably a Win 94
* SAA style revolver
* 1911 style pistol
* One US service longarm or clone -- anything from a Charleville to an M4, as the spirit moves you. Springfield 1903 is good. M1 is classic. :)

1. Battle rifle (AK, AR, M1, etc)
2. 12 Gauge pump shotgun
3. Combat pistol (1911, CZ, Beretta, etc)
4. CCW pistol (Khar,CZ, SIG, etc)
5. Muzzle loader rifle
6. .22 rifle
7. .22 pistol
8 Scoped .30-06 bolt rifle
9. At least 5000 rounds for all the above
10 Reloading equipment and components for above

In my opinion every house "needs" a small cal. pistol and rifle .22 is a good generality here. A highpower rilfe, if only one i vote 308. A fullpower hand gun, at least 9mm or .38. And a shotgun. The make, type, action, should be comfortable and useable by all responsible members of the household. And that assortment should cover most situations from practice, small game pot filling, and defense.

1) a reliable self-defense pistol (Glock, 1911, SIG many good ones out there.)

2) A Select-fire Colt M4

3) KAC SR-25 or Armalite AR-10 in .308 (scoped)

4) .338 Lapua Magnum bolt action or repeater. (scoped)

3) GE GAU-17 Gatling Cannon. (optionally gimbal mounted and slaved.)

4) GAU-8/A 30mm Gatling Cannon (optionally A-10 mounted)

4) F-18 with AMRAMs

5) F-18 or hielo with HELLFIRES

Hey, you asked.

M44's are $25 this month at Century. Fair condition with cracked stock, not pretty, but you said "Need". x54 ammo is cheap and plentiful. Next on the cheap list would be a Yugo M48, at around $60. Other than .22, 8mm ammo is about as cheap as you'll ever see. SKS's are under $100, and again, ammo is cheap. The M69 .22 trainer, at ~$50 is tough to beat.

Shotguns and pistols are nice, and would fit into the "should have" list, but should life ever depend on gathering game to eat, you are much better off trapping than hunting...

Must have, no matter what, an SKS of some type and pistol of quality such as Colt, Sig, Beretta, HK or if you prefer a revolver, a Smith.

My collection (not complete)
Chicom SKS
Colt AR-15
Cetme Sporter
Sig P232
Colt Combat Commander .38 Super
Colt Buntline Scout
And as of this coming Saturday, Glock G30

ABSOLUTELY NECESSARY:
One concealable handgun (.38 spcl or larger)
One .40+ cal defensive handgun
One .30 cal. semi-automatic cal rifle (w/20 rnd magazines)

DESIRABLE SECONDS:

One .22lr pistol

One .22lr Rifle (preferably scoped)

One .30 cal. bolt-action rifle (.308 or larger)

One shotgun (field barrel, optional shorter barrel).

One carbine length rifle, (SAR-1 would be perfect)

One .30 cal. sub-MOA scoped rifle.

this is what i have. cz75b for the car and night stand, G23 for ccw(soon to be a czP-01) hkusp40cmpct for back up, yugo sks for misc use, a 22cal kadet kit for traing, mosin nagant for ?????s and giggles and the shotgun will be here soon.:D

Everyone should own:

Handguns

H&K USP .45
S&W 586 6" .357
Ruger Mark II Gov't target .22, bull barrel

Rifles

Ruger 10/22
old lever action Marlin .32 special (same as .30-30)

Shotguns

Remington 1100 12
old Stevens pump 12

Oh wait, that's what I have. :D

I need more guns.

I love to breath new life into old threads :D . Heres my list of must haves.

1.) A pistol in a serious caliber (.45, .40S&W, etc) must be reliable Glock, Sig, 1911. My pick the Glock 21 followed by a good 1911 in second.

2.) One battle rifle AR, AK, SKS, FAL are all acceptable. My pick the AK.

3.) One shotgun. Remmington 870, Mossy 500, etc must be 12 gauge ideal would be chambered in 3 1/2" mag (so any loads could be used). Two barrels one slug, one shot. My choice is the good old 870.

4.) A good bolt action fitted with a good scope, Remmington 700 is my pick.

5.) A .22lr rifle of some sort I pick the Ruger 10/22.

Having one of these from the above list should cover any situation.

Since I'm a noob here, I'll add my $.02...

A legendary poster on another board put it best when he said
"All you really need is a FAL Paratrooper and a Hi Power. Everything else is just fluff"

Don't know that I agree but I liked the answer.

IMO the must haves are a pump shotgun, a .22 rifle, a good quality defensive handgun (1911, HP, SIG, GLOCK, XD, ...), a scoped rifle in 6-8 mm cal, some type of MBR (M1A, FAL, AK, G3, AR), an SKS, a match grade AR and a Garand. OK, The last 2 are just MY must haves. A pistol cal carbine isn't necessarily a must have but it'd sure come in handy for home defense or SHTF. It'd be a good gun for the kids to carry.

**Edit**
OK, After posting this, I read Glockfan.45's post, and what Iposted is pretty much the same. Sorry. Didn't mean to make this a 'me too' post.

Keeping in line with what I think is the intent of the OP, I think the only thing really NEEDED is a concealable handgun in .38 or higher. This can be used anywhere and also for HD. And in close second, a 12ga shotgun also for HD. A lot of guns listed in this thread may be fun. but not needed. Defense of life is the only need.

Now for actual recreational use, I'm gonna say in addition to the carry handgun and shotgun mentioned above, everyone should have a 1911, and a .22 for target/plinking.

Honestly, just about every firearms-related need could be filled with the following: .22lr rifle (any action type), scoped bolt-action in .30-06, 12 ga pump, and medium-frame 4" .357 mag revolver. But isn't it so much more fun to have one gun for each specific need, no matter how remote? I'm working on it.....:D

Must haves huh...
1911
357 magnum wheelgun
22lr long gun
22 wheelgun
12 shotgun
bolt action 300 win mag

Honorable mention: battle rifle of some kind - 223 or 308
