This weekend one of my neighbors was out shooting his gun. Most of the time it was one shot, no problem, but sometimes there would be about a 1 second long burst of shots, we heard this probobly 2-3 dozen times between saturday and sunday afternoon, i thought it was 5 and my wife thought there was 7 rounds a second be shot. Is this legal? if not should i report it? the guy is a deputy sheriff.

I think he is suggesting that his neighbor is in possession of a fully-automatic firearm.

What should I do?
Go introduce yourself to your wonderful neighbor and ask him if you can bring any ammo next time? Please? :D

As for legalities, sounds like he has the law on his side, now don't it?

Yes, rapid-firing of guns is legal.

If you're worried about the firearm being fully-automatic, then you should probably ask the individual about it the next time you see them.

Chances are it's a regular semi-auto or revolver, and the shooter is just practicing "rapid-fire" type drills. Even a "slow" shooter can approximate full-auto style rapid shots for short bursts.

If the individual is in fact shooting an actual FA weapon, it's highly unlikely that said weapon is illegal.

In short, relax. Unless it's seriously bothering you, let it be. If it does bother you, talk to them and let them know, and maybe ya'll can come to an agreement on a time when shooting is alright, and won't disturb you.

I am not able to talk to this person or anyone at the house. I'v been to his house several times about other things and you can see him or his wife standing at the window watching you but the won't come to the door, I have never talked to him. The reason for "turning him in" is just because he's not liked much in the area, which is not a good enough reason but i still want to....make sense?

Not sure what kind of firearm it is (assuming rifle?). He could be doing what is called "bump firing." Look it up on youtube.

Sounds like some kind of local feud. What ever axe you or he has to grind doesn't need our validation to make you feel good about yourself.
I and others I know shoot in their backyards and at time it may disrupt those who aren't used to such things, why nobody answers the door might have more to do with the neighbors than the residents.
Just speaking for myself.

7 rounds per second = 420 rounds per minute which is over 200 rounds per minute SHORT of the M16A1 rifle full auto rate of fire of 650-700 rounds per minute.

MYOB.

You're just looking for any instance to be able to get this guy for anything. Look up the definition of Karma.

If he is not shooting at night, and is leagal to shoot in the area you are in
and is doing so in a safe manner then it seems you are the one being a bad
neighbor.Just from your comment about nobody likes him it seems to me you just want a reason to get him in trouble which is not right.
somebody already mentioned KARMA, you might want to rethink yourself.:what:

No.

Nothing says that people have to live up to your expectations of what a "good neighbor" should be. If they won't answer the door, they don't have to. Unless they're causing you some sort of disturbance with the shooting, I'd suggest doing as NavyLT suggested and mind your own business.

However, if their actions are legitimately disruptive and possibly illegal, then by all means call the police and let them handle it. Be prepared to be told to MYOB by the police as well, though.

kingpin008 beat me to it by one post.

Turning someone in for what is apparently a non-crime not only doesn't make sense - it's borderline criminal.

Thread-lock in 10...9...8...

Why not just vandalize his house...maybe send him some anonymous hate mail?

After all, you say he's "he's not liked much in the area" ... so you'd just be expressing the voice of the community and be perfectly justified in doing so ... right?

I seriously doubt that the deputy/neighbor is using a full auto firearm. Maybe, but I think the OP heard some rapid fire, and for some reason he has a problem with that, but he does not have a beef with a slow rate of fire. My first question focused on that dichotomy, but he never answered it. I think it would be kind of cool to hear a mag dump every once in a while.

If you live in an area where it is ok to shoot in your backyard, and apparently the OP does, let him do it and don't bother him about it. You have to understand that many people choose to live in such a locale for that very reason. If it bothers you that much, move to the city. Then you'll just have to worry about the gang bangers doing the same thing instead of the deputy sheriff.

The fact is that most of us can make a firearm sound full-auto for bursts at a time. It may not be much in the way of practice but it is a hoot from time to time.

Don't forget the fact that he is also a deputy. No, that doesn't give him special standing in any way but even if his firearm is full-auto it may very well be department issued. Swat officers of many agencies maintain their issued full-auto firearms at home and are free to use them at will. In fact, it's generally highly encouraged. I know of a few agencies that issue former military M-16's, still full-auto or tri-burst, to their regular officers. I don't see a problem with that.

As a police officer, I often did not answer the door at my residence. Why, because more than a few times it would be some person out of the blue thinking it was ok to have me help look for their lost dog just because they saw my patrol car in the driveway..... or they wanted to report a vandalism to me while I was still in my underwear rather than making a call to the PD.... or they "just had a question" that they didn't want to bother calling 911 for (apparently they thought it was ok to bother me at all hours instead). Or maybe, just maybe, it was the guy who's life I was being held responsible for ruining and it was payback time.

My advice. Make friends with him. Take over a box of ammo and ask him to shoot it. Learn to love the sound of rights being exercised, or move out of the country to a place where it is nice and quiet. :)

Even if I knew someone was in possession of an illegal firearm, I would not report it. People have a right to own them, even if the government isn't currently recognizing that right.

we have several guys near here that fire full auto. kinda perturbed a few of the new comers. we also live within earshot of the crucible training center and once in a while they really light it up over there. gets the neighbor from massachussets all a quiver

I'd defy anyone to measure or pick out 7 rounds in one second by ear. SWAG.
