What size dovetail on Military 98 Mauser front sight??

I have a Yugo M48a and have a williams FP-98TK peep sight in the mail. I was really wanting one of those fire sights to go along with it, but they are all 3/8 dovetail. The one in the front sightpost of the mauser is way smaller. Mabye like the metric of a 1/4 inch. Has anybody ever milled or taken a file and open it up to the standard 3/8 dovetail, or am i wasting my time on it. would it me easier to get a ramp with a 3/8 dovetail already on it? Please chime in on your ideas. Thanks

It would be best to reduce the sight male dovetail to fit the female dovetail on the rifle.

That way, if you screw something up, it's not the rifle, it's a relatively cheap sight.

You will need a safe-edge dovetail file to do it right, regardless.

Midsouth Shooters Supply sells blanks with with the proper dovetail for a Mauser. They're pretty cheap, too.

mausers use a 13/64" dovetail.
marbles, lyman & williams used to make sights that fir the mauser dovetail but they are no longer in production.
a #27 marbles is the correct sight to fit a mausers dovetail, i don't know the lyman & williams part numbers off hand.
a #54 marbles for a enfield dovetail can easily be made to fit a mauser by filing the bottom of the sight down to the same depth as a mausers sight.
here is a picture of the #54 that has been modified to fit a mauser front sight base. it took about 10min. work to make it fit.

i have a couple of the #54 sights, if you would like one i'll take $15 + shipping. i have one with a 1/16" gold bead & one with a 1/16" ivory bead.

after being modified they are .255 from the bottom of the dovetail to the top of the sight. they are .280 before being modified. i just filled the bottom of the sight till the dovetail was the same height as the dovetail cut into the base then checked for fit. it was almost dead on, it only took a couple of light passes with a small 3 corner file to get the exact fit.
