I have a (soon to be barreled) Yugo M48 action, and I was wondering what sporter type synthetic stocks might still be around for it - the lighter the better.

Failing that - would it be possible to cut up a regular length '98 stock and JB weld/fiberglass skin the thing back to being usable on the shorter Yugo action? Or am I pretty much out of luck?

Thanks!

hello kay - you should be able to find m48 stocks without too much trouble. failing that m24/47 stocks will probably fit too.

i wouldn't cut up a k98 stock unless you really had too.

you know what they say about sporterizing... taking a 300 rifle, spending 500 on it, turning it into a 200 rifle...

i believe also that the ati "scout scope mount" stock will fit nicely. ive seen m48s with them. just chuck the stupid "scope mount" upper part.

I give mine a 'safe' place to live, a rubdown with G96 Gun Treatment about once a month and all the ammo they can digest, but STOCK OPTIONS??? Damn, You must really like your guns, giving them stock options! :D

The guy I bought my M48 from used it with the black plastic ATI stock with the built-in rail. It looks really beefy but is actually pretty light.

Boyd makes a walnut stock specifically for the Yugo M48 (JRS Classic) you can get from midwayusa.com but I've never tried it.

"...the lighter the better..." That's not always a good thing. Light weight rifles have more felt recoil. A light weight 8mm Mauser will have considerable felt recoil.

That and the words synthetic and Mauser go together about as well as the words mustard and ice cream:banghead:

Stock for M-48

I know you wanted synthetic but IMHO, the nicest looking stocks for the M-48 are the Boyd's laminated stocks. The 2 standard colors are brownish ("Nutmeg") or grayish ("Pepper"), or you can have a whole rainbow of custom colors at added cost.

BTW, it would seem like a futile attempt to try surgery on a K-98 stock--The M-48 action is just 1/4 inch shorter I believe, and cutting that little out of the K-98 stock and pieceing it back together, and having it (a) functionally strong and (b) not looking like Frankenstein's monster, would be a bit of a challenge.

When I made a pseudo-scout out of an M-48 I used a Boyd's stock. Bought an unfinished (meaning not varnished--all the inletting, etc, is complete!) stock, dremelled out space and glass-bedded it, sanded it (this is the most tedious part of any woodworking project, believe me!) and gave it abt. 7 coats of cheap hardware-store satin spar varnish. It looks better than I have any right to expect. Shoots pretty good, too.

You can get the varnish, sandpaper, etc, from Boyd's, but your local hardware store has much the same for cheaper. IIRC, I used Brownell's Acragel for the glass-bedding. Would do so again.

The whole thing wasn't hard, or mentally taxing, it just took keeping at it. And Following Directions, re the glass-bedding. You can only do so much each day, then the varnish or the glass material has to have time to set. The process took me about 2 weeks, at an hour or so each day.

The Boyd's salespeople were VERY helpful and patient while I was trying to get exactly the right stock--I imagine they go through this a lot. Anyhow, if I can do it anybody can. And I would do it again.

Boyd's will send you their catalogue for the asking, and their website is nice too. Website: www.boydsgunstocks.com Snail mail: Boyd's Gunstock Industries, inc. 25376 403rd Ave, Mitchell, SD 57301. Phone: 605-996-5011. Fax: 605-996-9878.

I wish you well on yr project! :)

Thanks all - that helps a lot. :)

And trust me purists, it's not in any shape to be a museum piece.. especially after I got it back after loaning it out with the bore now turned to a coal mine. :(

So I figure might as well make something useful from it.

I've got an extra stock I was given that I was told was for either a M 48 or a 24/47. It's the standard wood military stock. I believe it has the hardware, or most of the hardware at least. It's yours for the cost of shipping if you want it. Drop me a PM if you are interested.
