I'm about to order my first BP gun, a stainless 1858 new army from Cabelas. I also want to order everything else I'll need to shoot it. What exactly do I need?

My list so far:
- Gun
- Bullets - .454 round balls?
- Powder - what kind?
- Caps - #10?
- Lube

What else?

Also, I assume it's OK to use the blued cylinders in a stainless gun? Yes, I'm that cheap. :)

Might pick you up a nipple wrench, capper, wonder wads are nice, flask for your powder with a 24gr. or 30gr. spout, nipple pick, belt, holster...all of which can be ordered from Cabela's too. As for powder...I'm happy with Goex or Graf in my revolver.

I have a long tuberware type bowl for putting boiling soapy water(dish soap) in to soak the gun for cleaning and paper towels for drying and Thompson's Bore Butter for seasoning the gun afterwards and protecting it until the next time out.

Is that the correct cap and ball size?

I was going to get the stainless gun because it was on sale, but now it's not. Do you guys think it's worth an extra hundred bucks for the corrosion resistance? I'm thinking the money would be better spent on more cylinders...

Caps should be fine, I use #10 Remington caps on my 1858, but I use .457s in ball size. .454s will work though, but I prefer the larger ones. I wouldn't worry about getting a stainless personally, the money could be used elsewhere if you don't have a lot to spend. I don't have a problem with a non stainless at all, just clean it up after you shoot.

My opinion...spend the extra on something else. Cap size is correct. The .454 ball size is what I shoot out of the 1860 army...same with my buddy in his 1858 Remington.

I'd go with 11's myself thats what mine likes but try both. You can use crisco as lube but I recomend TC's bore butter. Get some Pyrodex P untill you find of source of real BP. Go with a blued gun as stainless is blasphemy and spend the savings on a slim jim holster and civil war belt from triple K. Heres a pic for inspiration.

Ok, I coulda swore I saw real black powder on Cabelas website a few days ago, but now I only see the fakes. Do they sell the real stuff online or was I just drunk? :)

You must have been drunk, and you didn't invite me! :)

I have never seen real BP for sale on their site, but if you have one near you, maybe they will have it in the store, the Cabelas near me carries it.
