I don't buy this caliber often, but I had a bit of a shock today when I opened an email from Midwayusa. seems they have a sale on 7.62x54r surplus ammo....$199 for 880 rounds! the last time I bought some, it was way less than half that price :cuss:. did I miss something, or is the supply finally starting to run dry?

I'm kicking myself for not stocking up earlier....

Thats what the ammo dealers were saying at the last two gun shows that I have gone to. Surp is running out for now, but there is plenty of over priced commercial stuff available

they are , of course, lying. Think about this; 50 million mosin nagants made, that doesnt count svd's, 44stg's, rpks, ( or is it pkm's) and countless other weapons that use that round. they are just jacking the price, because all other ammo is totally jacked. You cannot reload the steel stuff, but everyting else you can, or you can just get silver bear or brown bear, which costs 7 to 9 bucks a box, depending on where you get it from, and how much. I usually get it from ammunitiontogo.com, silver bear, for 7 bucks a box, when buying bulk.

just odd that it even the mil surp 7.62X54r has seemed to jump in price by so much while the price of cheap 7.62X39 hasn't changed, at least not where I buy it

It's a classic case of supply and demand. We have a lot of new gun owners and many of them bought the cheap but reliable Mosin Nagant. That means you are competing with a lot of people who want the same ammunition. Since the demand is up the prices have gone up.

The prices will hopefully go down in a couple of months. That's if this gun boom slows, which it should.

Yep. They went to the store for an AK or AR, but there weren't any. And the SKS was four times as much as what their friend had told them he paid last year! But wait -- what's that? Hey, that's the cool old Russian rifle they'd seen in some movie a few years back, for a fraction of what they were going to spend. "Is ammo still available? Really? That's less expensive than .30-'06, isn't it? Sure, I'll take a case." Now imagine this scene, times twenty thousand.

Shortage of the stuff . War in Afghanistan and troubles throughout the globe uses this ammo.

Its just price gouging.
I talked to a local importer the other day Said they have about 100,000,000 rounds of it waiting to get shipped over here.
Its not drying up at all.

I just bought 300 rounds of lead core, non-magnetic, yugo ball ammunition for $80 + $20 shipping. I went to a gun show on sunday and picked up 15 rounds of the same stuff for $6.44/box (232 rounds for $100 when extrapolated). There were a couple other people selling 20 rounds of steel core or non-magnetic lead core for $5/box but they sold out sunday. There were spam cans all over the place, 440 rounds for $80-$120. Unfortunately, I need non-magnetic core ammo for the range I go to. I think it all depends where you look, but prices go up as the cost of doing business and living goes up.

ACBMWM3:

Finally, somebody actually heard the inside story on shipping plans, spoken by an importer.
It is strange to hear anything from a distributor or gun show staff except buy, buy, it will be highly taxed or banned (smiling all the way to the bank as people wring their hands)....and so your contact is quite sure about it?

The two main businesses who sell it on 'GB' have had consistent prices on bulk x54R for weeks. The guy in Stillwater has many cases in his photos and the lettering is Cyrillic, and I doubt that very much of it is Bulgarian handgun ammo. The guy in NC always has green oval cans for sale at the same prices.

Maksim... same as any other load, just have to be sure that you start with good brass... S&B seems ok.

AND... if you have several mosin's, you could have troubles with case length from one gun to the other as the headspace varies so much.

(New to reloading, so please feel free to double check this information)

The Mosin's are flooding the market right now. Probably the last of the surplus guns. Garands, Carbines,
Enfields, SKS's, Mausers, Swiss 6.5s, and now the Nagants......

We have a lot of new gun owners and many of them bought the cheap but reliable Mosin Nagant.

You can add me to this list. I needed a cheap and reliable rifle on a tight budget. I buy a hundred rounds a month from ammoman to stock up as best I can. I'm behind the curve. So to all those who bemoan the price increase from times gone by, allow me to say "sorry" on behalf of all of the younguns and newbies who waited. :(

I dont see the prices coming down, im sure they will go even higher,

Years back I bought 4 cases of 8mm, 198 grn, egyp or turkish ,, good stuff,Im glad I bought that when i did, it was dirt cheap. well 20 years ago it was, like the 7.62x 39 ammo,1200 1300 rds for like 110 bucks, something like that, back in 87 or 89

ACBMWM3:

Was the guy referring to the newer, more expensive Bear, Wolf and Partizan, or mostly the really cheap surplus from Bulgaria, the Czech Republic and Poland?
If you prefer, any e-mail is welcome.

When guys on forums claim that prices will go up soon, maybe some of them "buy it" for their business ;) and little for personal use.
There is no way to separate gun store owners (maybe using seven different nicknames on other sites) and strictly personal users on any forum, is there?

Same thing that happened to all the ammo prices, across the board.

People are hoarding guns, ammo, and reloading components.

Welcome to 2009. Now get back in line. ;)

I think it comes down to:
1) higher demand for ammo because of
the increased purchasing of guns.
2) Much higher demand for cheap stuff since people buy more of
that then hunting or self defense 'higher quality' ammo.
3) commodity prices are going up all the time.
4) prices are sticky. prices for many things don't go down
even if the supply increases. I think this applies to ammo.

I think eventually the supply will catch up to demand
but the cheap surplus stuff will unlikely go back to what they were.

So buy while you can.
