First handgun I ever shot was this little bitty snub nose revolver that had no sights was double action and fired .22 short only. Can't remember if it was a break down or a swing arm but it was definitely not one of those h&r type deals where you take the cylinder off to re load. I was a teenager and it was dark but we had the porch light on. My old man got it out in memory of my grandpa who had passed away two years prior. Grandpa had bought the thing for $5 in the Philippines while he was in the navy in the 1950's. Needed a Saturday night special to accompany him to gambling dens in the Philippines. I don't remember what it was called or who made it. Any guesses?
 
I would guess from your description it was something like a Belgian made gate loading pocket revolver from the early 1900s. More or less made on the British Bulldog pattern in many different calibers.
