What type of buttstock should I get?

I'm going for a SD shotgun that will play a big role in my home/car/camping defense roles. I've basically settled on getting a good Remington 870 shotgun, but the type of buttstock I want is still holding me up, so I decided to get everyone's take on this. Remember when looking through these that maneuverability is a big option, but practicality is the biggest.

The first one -- The Collapsible stock.

See, I've definitely ruled out the idea of using a pistol grip on my shotgun, but this pistol grip has a collapsible stock that comes off it. Feedback -- any of you guys have ones like this and like them??

The next is this one:

Third is a pistol-grip full stock, which is the one I'm thinking heaviest on: (honest guys, the only pic I could find of this gun just happened to have a hot girl in it :D )

And, of course, the fully stocked shotgun --

So what do you think?

Not going to comment on the "hot girl" part so I'll get back on track!

I don't think I'd ever buy a folding stock for my shottie. Reason being, I can't really think of when I'd ever use the pistol grip-only unless I was trying to store it in a confined space. So with that said, even if I had a folding stock, the stock would always be extended.

The collapsible stock is an interesting option, best feature being able to adjust the length of pull, not to mention the Knoxx stocks eliminate recoil for faster/more accurate follow-ups. If I was married, or had a girlfriend living in my home with me, I'd look into these so she could adjust it for her size.

For now, I've stuck with the fixed stock with the pistol grip. Simple, no moving parts, and I don't really have a good excuse to replace it at this point.

Hope that helped, buddy.

I assume compact for storage is a nice plus for you or you would not be looking at those options. Can you get the collapsible stock with the hot girl option? The folder does not look all that useful folded to me and the collapsible looks a lot more comfortable but a little longer closed. I have to admit I am no fan of pistol grips on shotguns though so guess what I have.

Just where can you get the collapsible stock with the hot girl option? I could definatly use one (or 4).

Since the pistol grip on a stock is just a gimmick that leaves the last option.

I can enthusiastically recommend the Knoxx SpecOps stock. Felt recoil is negligible. The stock is also collapsable so you can adjust it to different sized shooters. It's expensive though.

It depends.

What did you learn to shoot? What do you have the most trigger time on, that is, what style are you most familiar with?

Best bet is to use what you know. If you're starting pretty much from scratch then it doesn't really matter too much, you can learn to shoot whatever style you decide you like.

I learned to shoot a conventionally stocked shotgun some 40 years ago and have never cared for pistol grip or folding stocks on shotguns. YMMV, go with what works for you.

i used to think folding stocks on shotguns were cool, untill i handled a few. i had some really nice ones and they all felt wrong. for me its pistol grip only, or regular stock.

As Lee said, your choice depends on what you're used to. I have a side-folding pistol grip stock on my 870 Marine Magnum because compactness and portability are necessary in my line of work. In the past, I preferred a conventional stock, but years of handling the folder/pistol grip has made it second-nature to me. I'm not a fan of top-folders, though.

So, in my opinion, if you're already comfortable with a certain type of stock, then stay with it. It'll result in less familiarization time and won't get in your way if/when you need it.

The one that fits YOU for task.
The one YOU have thousands of rounds of trigger time on and training for tasks have proven best to you, from using a variety of guns and therefore will be using the adage "try before you buy".

Me?

Like Lee, the earth was flat when I started with shotguns...

I use bone stock Wood & Blue Shotguns with Tradtional stocks or English / Straight stocks, Pachmahr Decelartor recoil pads, no mag extensions, no side saddles.

I can do any and everything with this set up that fits ME. I still have lots to learn, always will. Some folks got to tallying round counts for me over the years based on some guns...first one they tallied has 300k rds I personally put thru it ...doing everything from defensive role to competition to hunting...just a regular old bone stock wood and blue shotgun with regular old stock...
...other shotguns in the tallying...just regular old wood and blue shotguns with regular or straight stocks...

Just me you understand...

Exactly my problem. I plan on getting a normal 870 and using this special stock for when I'm transporting it to drop the overall size down. What type of folding stock do you use, Demolition?

Tearlachblair,

I've got a Choate side-folder. It comes with a short fore-end to replace the stock 870 piece.

It's not much to look at, but it works like a charm. It has also been pretty much indestructible. I have no complaints.
