I have a 9mm cleaning kit that I think the only thing I can use from is the nylon brush... What all do I need to clean an AR15? I'm interested in the bore snakes that have a brass weight on them to put through the barrel, what else?

Thanks

You can always get a USGI cleaning kit, CLP, patches, pipe cleaners and Q-tips. Has been working or decades now with no problem. :)

I don't care for bore-snakes. If they do a decent job on the first couple of passes, why would you want to haul all the crap through the chamber and barrel again?

For field cleaning, I use the PatchWorm - only requires that you buy one size of patch (1 1/4" works for me for 22 thru 12ga) for multiple calibers. When the barrel is still warm, I drag through a couple with CLP or Ed's Red on them and then a couple of dry. Makes later cleanup a snap.

I prefer the Otis kit- it has pretty much everything you need to clean any gun, just add a chamber brush and picks for cleaning around the barrel extension lugs and you are set. They also make a set specific to ARs that fir in the buttstock.

I also use the otis and a boresnake. I'll only use the Boresnake if I'm being lazy or am going to do a more thorough cleaning later. The otis kit works great and wasn't too pricey.

Avoid the boresnake type devices, all you are doing is spreading filth.
Use a sectioned rod only in an emergancy, the sections can catch the rifling. Better 'pocket' type 'rod' is the Otis flexible.

A solid rod, jag tip, bronze brushes, cotton batches and a bore guide will get you started.

Otis kit works great. You do need to buy an AR chamber brush, though. Especially if you plan on shooting any Wolf or other steel cases ammunition. It will keep it clean of laquer or powder fouling.

hopees #9
patches
general purpose brushes, ie the green 2 sided ones.
bore brushes
chamber brushes
bore snake
a few jags, and i think that yo uwill be good to go.
a little aresol cleaner will be nice to like g96, strike hold etc.

Otis kit is my choice for cleaning the AR and nearly all my rifles. However, I hadn't heard of the patchworm before and will have to look into that. It looks similar, but not identical, to how an Otis kit works.

I use FP-10 as my only cleaning fluid. Works well for me. I would probably use Hoppes #9 if I thought I wasn't getting anywhere with FP-10.
