What to do with a .338 Win?

Forget the 338 and get a browning in 325 short mag--I've had mine ported (shoulder problems and old age) and with handloads you can do whatever a 7 mag and a 338 mag can. I have a 7mag, 300 short mag, weatherby 270mag,and a sako 338 mag-- I've only got 120 rounds through the 325 but its becoming my favorite. But thats just my 2 cents!!

Snorkel Bob;

If it were me, and it recently was, I'd get a .338 Winchester magnum, and I did. Love it. Mine's a Tikka WhitetailHunter LHB. The Tikka was what was available, & when you're in the market for an above .30 caliber gun with a Left Hand Bolt, you can't be picky. The Tikka is frequently called a stripped down Sako, & that's pretty much correct. So, take the Sako, enjoy the new gun, & don't look back.

I don't find the recoil to be at all objectionable. That said, I did put a Pachmayr decelerator pad on it. I'm still in load development on it, but currently shooting 225 gr Hornady's at 2875 fps. I don't know what the recoil energy is, but don't find it to be unpleasant, let alone painful.

If you handload, take a good look at the secional density & B/C of the various bullets available for the .338's. I think you'll find that the caliber makes an excellent long-range platform, carrying much better downrange energy than the 7mm.

Well I ended up selling the Sako, gentleman walked in and asked specifically for that rifle. Made the sale and go it off my mind. Still have the Remmy 338 on the shelf though and its killing me see it there. Might make the go ahead in the next few days. I think I liked the Remmy better anyways. $499 is a helluva price.
I should be buying a scope for my new .204 though. seems like I always get rifles before I get optics.

Allthough I just got in a Weatherby Ultra-light in 300WBY $1100. Now that is a sexy rifle. Man I am a slut for new guns. :D

DO NOT buy the Sako!!!

view attached files for VERY good reasons to use sako's for poking firewood, and nothing else!

I love the .338

Above my 30-06, I think I only need the .338 Win Mag and the 45/70. If I have those 3 I can do any BIG game hunting there is in North America.

I don't believe in the faster .30s, I think if you need more then an '06 you need more caliber, not just speed.

I'll probably buy a .375 eventually.

A buddy of mine has one and he accidently shot through a tree one year. :what:

I can't see the pictures, but I am guessing that you are referring to problems Sako/Beretta had with a bad batch of steel. It was limited to guns produced from that batch. Otherwise, Sako rifles, while not perfect, are excellent IMHO. Can you name any manufacturer that hasn't ever had a recall or a problem with one of their guns?

Fella's;

And as I understand it, it was only a batch of stainless steel. About 6000 linear feet. All the blue steel Sako/Tikka's are just fine.

Hi Guys I have missing for a while.

Preacherman, I got to disagree with you on the 338 bore. Its a good option in Elk country. Alaska Kudo's also, even the 338-06 is a very good round, better SD on really a pack of premium grade bullets. There isn't much to dislike.

Artherd, I would rather have this in a CRF action. A model 700 Remington would not be first choice in this chambering. I don't see much need for a 375 H&H in a Remington either. I am not a Remington hater or anything but there are better options of rifles in a 338. A new Model 70 Winchester, a CZ550, even the high end Ruger 77 would be prefered by me. A Sako 75 in this would be a nice choice.

Just my $.02

Ya'll are gonna hate me, I bought the Remmy. But I got it for $300. Came into a good clearance sale and took advantage of it.
N.I.B Rem 700 S/S for $300 is a hard thing to pass up
Now Ive got 3 rifles that I need scopes for
Oh well its only money

Bob,
That's one heck of a price! I think I paid $450-$500 over 10 years ago for mine.
If yours shoots as well as mine, I'm sure you'll be happy with it!
