About 14 or 15 years ago I bought bryco arms model 38 .380 cal. pistol...It was cheap and I didnt have much money! Anyway, I have shot this gun only a few times. The last time I shot it which was yrs. ago the whole top slide blew off the gun....
I put the gun back together and never liked it or shot it again..

I didnt want to sell the gun to anyone and I didnt want anyone to ever shoot this gun again so I removed part of the trigger, all of the springs and firing pin...

I have this gun registered in my name but I dont want it in my house anymore, I thought about destroying it but what would I do with a destroyed gun with serial numbers on it....

I live in Michigan and I thought maybe I could take it to my local police dept. but I dont know!!drf

If it is registered in your name, turn it into the police and get a dated and timed receipt showing the serial number. That way if it somehow "strays" into the wrong hands, you are clear. (Of course, the cops would never sell it on the street or anything like that; the guns I have bought from cops were all obtained honestly! Sure.)

If it were not traceable to you, I would say just destroy it or find a deep lake, but as it is in your name, I would make sure your fanny is covered.

You could disassemble the gun into individual parts, smash each one flat with a sledge hammer or chop them up with a torch and throw it in the trash.

OR

The next time the antis in your area have a "gun buyback", turn it in for the $$$ or whatever they are offering and put that toward your next gun purchase.

Years ago I had bought a used Sterling .22cal pocket pistol that, after a few years use, would double on me due to a rounded off sear.

I turned it in during a local buy-back "stunt" the local PD was holding and got a $100.00 certificate good at a local sporting goods store (only paid 50.00 dollars for the Sterling).

Bought a hundred dollars worth of ammo with that certificate. :D

Saw a lot of nice Remington and Winchester rifles in their bin that day. Stupid people.....such a shame:banghead:

Bring a metal detector. You wouldn't want to dent a nice shovel on a High Point.

Take the gun completely apart and discard parts in a lake, keeping the frame. Turn the frame in to the local police and get a reciept as stated earlier with date and serial number. This ensures that nobody will shoot it and also ensures that your buttocks will be covered. You might want to mutilate the frame in some way so long as the serial numbers are intact when you turn it in along with all other markings.

If the only part with a serial number is the frame destroy it with large hammer/anvil or torch it , as for the slide , barrel , magazine etc list these parts on ebay , there are gun parts like these on there all the time and some bring surprising amounts . Just because the gun had problems doesn't mean someone couldn't use some of the parts . A gun is a terrible thing to waste .

By far the best advice given.

This too sounds like a great idea. :)

I am in Michigan as well. I'll take it off your hands. I would get a pistol permit for it. I would like to use it for a reference for a firearms training business I am working on. If interested, let me know.

1. Turn it in to the police for destruction. Request a property receipt. This will have the firearm's serial number on it, as well as the name and badge number of the cop who collected it, and the date and time it was collected. Store this document with your personal records.

Since the cost to you is zero, they do the work, and they will even come to your door to pick it up, any other method of destruction is just silly.

2. Sell it. Or part it out and sell it.

3. Remove firing pin, plug barrel and chamber, paint the grips red and turn it into a dummy gun for weapon disarm drills. Be advised, it is still considered a gun to The Powers That Be. But there is no chance of it going boom.
