Your sig line states that you are a certified Glock armourer yet you are worried about messing up a battle rifle?
Sounds crazy I know, but my logic is that a Glock is a Glock. There is absolutely nothing special or historical about any of my Glocks. A Garand however, not the same case. There are a finite amount of them. I just didn't think of it in the terms that it's a battle rifle, and doesn't need kid gloves.

What qualifies as a "thumper" to you all? Anything .30 cal and up? Or more along the lines of a magnum or 45-70?

Well if you have made up your mind on a Garand, fine...can't go wrong with one of those.

If you are interested in learning a totally different aspect of shooting, buy a muzzleloading rifle or handgun and educate yourself on how to shoot blackpowder guns. It's different, and fun. Most of us grin when we shoot one.

Those older S&W revolvers are fun to shoot. Look at something like a model 19, 66, 27, 28, 29, 57. They shoot well with cast bullets also.

Lemme say sumthin' about this... 1. Virtually all of the CMP guns are redone in some way so the historical value is nil. 2. and most important - it would be really, really hard to hurt a Garand, short of running it over with a tank. Not sure a Jeep would do it... They are tough critters and I'll bet the bazillions that survived WWII did not get super swell care...

I think hurting a Garand might be as easy as firing an off the shelf commercial .30-06 round through it.

But yes I was going to say this...almost anything you get from the CMP is going to be a conglomeration of multiple different guns, possibly with every part being produced after WWII ended, nothing matching, and some brand new modern day parts (like a new CMP stock for example).

I've thought about it, and I'm just gonna get a CMP Garand. I'll kick myself if I don't.

Load up on whatever the best currently available surplus ball ammo is too

Well, I sent in the order form and needed documents. Went with a Special grade and a 192 round spam can of surplus M2 ball with the en blocs. Now the wait begins!

Thanks for pushing me towards the Garand, I'm sure I won't regret it.

I'll post pics when it comes in the next 30-60 days
