If you are seriously considering a 9mm semi-auto, do yourself a favor and head to a range that rents guns; or take some of your buddies along who own guns and have them bring them along -- you can supply the ammo. Take your time, and test-drive a wide variety of handguns. Before long, you'll find a single pistol that best fits your hand and eye, and that's the one to get, regardless of all the well-meaning advice that you'll find here. Just be sure that you give the Walther P99 or P99C a thorough trial run before you make any decisions. No list of quality firearms is complete without it.

4" 686 or 586, or any of the Glocks, FNP, CZ, HK, Sig, S&W metal framed auto, current production S&W auto, Bersa, whatever you like the feel of in 9mm.

A 5906 would be a great choice.

9mm for ammo cost, .357 for ammo cost and versatility in one.

i would say take a look at sig229/226,cz 75/75 compact, beretta 92fs. i own a few sigs & the beretta 92fs they are good & reliable. i dont have a cz 75compact s/a yet but i want one. rent some of these that have been mentioned & see which ones you shoot the best. also which ones feel the best in your hands.

Thank you everyone for your responses so far. I am seeing a few people say go rent some before you buy. There is a problem with that. There is only one place in my area that rents guns. I don't remember prices exactly but it goes something like this. $30 to rent, $10 each gun after that, $25 range fee and you have to buy ammo from them to shoot thru there guns. The ammo they sell you is about 4x what you can get the same ammo for from anywhere that sells it. So your looking at a lot of money to go try a few guns. Oh and the few times I have been in there the guys are just mean, if your not shooting a cannon they don't have the time of day for you.
What I was looking for is some guns to research, stop by the gun shop and see how they fell. Also the range I go to there are a lot of really nice people. After a little research I figure I can start talking to people at the range and some what know what I am talking about. When I was looking for a new .22lr I was talking to a few people that were shooting a few of the guns that were on my final list. One guy asked me if I wanted to shoot his MKIII and his BM Camper, but he wanted to shoot my old Colt from the 70's. I was fun trading guns for a few targets. After that day at the range I decided to buy the BM Camper SS. Hopefully something like that will happen again.
Please keep the post coming I'm learning a lot.

Well I did it. I just went and bought a Glock 17. Hopefully sometime next week I can go and shoot it.
