What to take to Afghanistan...

I got back 13 months ago. My unit was dual carry. I don't think any of my guys used their M9s in a fight and rarely took them on patrols. Over there ounces are pounds.

Save your money, going to a 9MM when you have .223 is not a good move. I wouldn't risk getting in trouble for something I was not authorized to have. Not to mention your chain of command would probably make you turn it in as soon as they know you have it.

If I did anything, I would get a couple of extra .223 mags. If I'm carrying extra weight, I want it to be ammo.

As far as large belt knives ~ I had one in Afghanistan and wound up shipping it home because it wasn't practical. I carried an Emerson Super CQC 7 and a Swiss Army Knife (Victorinox Trekker) the whole time. Do over, I would have just taken the SAK.

The less you have to keep up with and move around ~ the better.

...and this pump will be squad sized element PB's (patrol bases) meaning I'll be spending 3-4 months at a time with no more than 13 Marines living and operating in presence patrols in and around key villages

You can find a pistol pretty easily in Afghanistan after you get there. Bring some cash. Trust me.

Don't bring one with you. No matter what your buddies tell you. Darwin Award move...

When it is found, your CoC will hang you out to dry after the bus gets through running you over.

Is it that hard to simply answer the OP's thread question?
R0CKETMAN, we have very high standards and goals here at THR. Please get to know our community a bit and you'll be able to better appreciate what they are and why.

When someone asks about breaking the law, we are going to step out from behind our normal "On-Topic" response, and tell it like it REALLY is.

We don't want any of our members arrested, demoted, or dishonorably discharged.

We can all have differences of opinion on many, many things. But when it comes to clear questions of LAW, there is only one High Road way.

And, on that note - I'm gonna be grumpy and close this down. The OP has been answered - maybe not to his satisfaction, but to the appropriate point nevertheless.

Oh, and thanks to all the folks that have BTDT and that helped answer this one.
