When people mention that they take a stone to a new pistol to help smooth out the slide to frame fit , what do they mean? Do they just smooth over the sharp corners? I tried to find examples of this in threads but I couldn't find any.

honing stone

What they are describing is taking an honing stone to smooth out the sharp edges. Extra fine sharpening stone.

tank, since I owe you a straight answer, usually a few reasons: to enhance reliability (ensure proper fitting as sometimes pistol parts come with spurs), improve the trigger and to "dehorn" the weapon to ensure there are no sharp corners so one does not cut his hand on the weapon (make it like a worn bar of soap).
