I am thinking about buying a Savage 212 shotgun. I was wondering how far people have been able to shoot accurately with these. Also I heard there is a certain base and rings to buy for this gun.

Ideas on the gun?

Ideas on which base and rings?

Ideas on scope?

Probably the most accurate slug gun on the market. It is built as a rifle that happens to fire shotgun shells. I have shot the 220, and was very impressed. Sub 2" groups at 100 yds off the bench.

Only better slug gun out there is the TarHunt...at $2500.

As far as bases and rings...I buy steel for just about everything, holds up better than the aluminum, especially in the long run with magnum loads. A scope made specifically for shotgun is a good idea as well, they tend to have a couple more inches of eye relief preventing the scope from smacking you. Something like the Nikon Slugmaster... http://www.basspro.com/Nikon-reg-SlugHunter-Shotgun-Scope/product/10207978/48114

Ok so a few things here. First off I got the gun today and the 12 gauge comes with a scope base on it already. The 20 gauge does NOT. I bought some burris tactical mid rings to use and a Leupold Ultimate Slam 3-9X40 with the SABR reticle. I will post more as I find it out with this setup. I will get the scope next week sometime.

As far as rings go, they are much more important than the base, get SOLID rings. Avoid millets or anything else that has adjustments on the rings. The slug has a lot more kick than a .223 and if the scope is not properly secured on a slug gun, it will move, scratching that brand new leupold and screwing up your ranging.
