How can I tell what type of AR upper I own ?
What markings should I look for to identify manufacturer ?
Any help would be appreciated.
I have owned this upper since early 1990's

There weren't nearly as many AR manufacturers then as now. Uppers usually don't have a lot of manufacturer info. The barrel engraving might give you some info. The upper receiver should have a forge proof mark and might have some other info. Post some pics of any markings.

There should be some small letters, usually by the sight. What are they? As mentioned, real close pics are helpful. As for A1, A2, etc. if that is what you mean by type, does it have an elevation ring or not. Does it have a forward assist?

If you can find a name, and you probably won't, that's it. There are some symbols as to which forging company made the blank, but that won't tell you a thing about who machined or assembled it. So you could have a genuine Colt upper and wouldn't know.

Markings on AR upper

Here is everything I could find on the AR upper.

On the top of the barrel in forward of the front sight is the following:
"FNM1 MP CHROME BORE"

On the left side of the front sight is: "2 R"

On the right side of the carry handle below the rear sight is:
"D K"

Any ideas as to who manufactured this upper or its parts ?

As I said in my first post, I have owned this upper since early 90's

Thanks in advance for your help

FNM1, i believe is a FN barrel. Very good quality.

MP = magnetic particle inspected. The stamping means it was done individually on this barrel vs batch inspecting, 1 out of a 100.

Chrome bore = chrome lined bore.

DK = Diemaco / Kaiser Aluminum. Upper forging company.

From googling these markings, it reads that maybe it is a FN upper. Being FN, MP, Chrome bore marked, the specs seem good.

2 R ?

Any idea what the "2 R" on the left side of the front sight means ?

Magnetic Particle Inspection

What all is involved with a MP inspection ?
This is a great website with very informed members.
