If for whatever reason, you could only have one type of firearm (but as many of them as you want), what would it be and why? Just to be clear, by type I mean handgun, shotgun, or rifle.

Rifle. For obvious reasons. Aside from busting clays, hunting fowl, and a very few select shotgun specific tasks, (breaching doors, less lethal rounds, etc.) a rifle does everything better than a shotgun, and a handgun/sidearm has nothing going for it except for its size.

My opinion only.

Handgun. The others serve their roles, but kinda hard to CC. Self defense comes first.

Despite being the toughest decision of the day, I'd go with a shotgun. Reason being that a shotgun has the option of slugs while rifles don't offer the option of birdshot. I'll take the most versatile gun if it's going to be my only gun.

After thinking on this a bit, I think intent comes into play alot when dealing with this hypothetical question. i stand by my earlier post if you consider actual use of the firearm. Meaning if you actually needed a type of weapon to fill most roles that actually involve discharging the firearm, a rifle will most often be superior. However the best gun is the one you have with you when you need it, so i can definitely see the point involving a handgun.

Also, consider you can get any caliber barrel for the modular rifles, including shotgun and pistol caliber.

I guess I was considering teotwawki and not everyday carry. :)

Too many unknowns to play along;
Am I the only person left alive?
Do other people have weapons and if so what type weapons do they have?
Do I have access to edged and contact weapons?
What are my surroundings?
Am I nomadic scavenger or a hunter/gatherer?
What is my food supply and where does it come from?
Am I on earth?
Do I live on land?
Do I walk upright?
What do these ink blots look like to you?

Yep they all have specific uses and as such I feel that there is not one good answer. Your particular use would drive the answer and your need changes by the situation presented in real time. I feel they all are used for defense--gathering food--recreation and many other things. So I also will not choose the "best" use.:)

If I can only have one type, why is that? What types does the government have?

As long as the Feds have rifles, that's what I want.

Shotguns - and all for fun - from pigeons to driven birds to targets to doves and then quail; give me a nice variety of O/U and SxSs

I am not in a war and do not live in a war zone, I use my guns for fun and games

A carbine type of rifle would be the best option, in a WROL or SHTF situation a pistol would not do as a primary neither will the shotgun.

Anyone with a rifle would outrange me with a rifle so I chose a rifle for the best range and accuracy.

If all known firearms could only be crammed into those three categories, I'd opt for the 'handgun' category so that I could have everything from a normal Glock, a revolver, and a derringer, to a Mossberg Cruiser, a Thompson Contender and a Serbu Shorty, to an AR or AK pistol.

You are not the only person left alive, other people have weapons from the category that they chose, you can have edged and contact weapons, your surroundings are your current locale, but you can move if you wish, this is America after all, you can be a nomad or scavenger if you want (see above comment about America), your food supply could be your local Wally World or you can live off of the land, I'd hope you're on Earth, I know I am, you can live on whatever you want, land or water, you can walk upright if you want, I don't know about you, but I don't like crab walking.

What I'm getting at is just state a situation and what you'd want. For example "In a SHTF situation I want a shotgun because..." get as specific or general as you want.
**EDIT**
Pick based on your current needs/concerns like safety, hunting, recreation or SHTF/end of the world/zombie apocalypse

I voted shotgun. I hunt deer and turkey and can't use centerfire anything for either of those in this state. Shotgun ain't too shabby as far as SD goes either. For now, until the poice chief gets off his political soapbox long enough to actually follow the law, CCW isn't a consideration for me.

Thank goodness I don't have to choose, so I won't! :D

The gun I keep with me all the time would most likely be my choice.

Rifle, in the current most prevalent military or LE caliber.

Your sidearm is what you use to fight your way back to your rifle, and scatter guns, though nice in close quarters, are less effective at long range.

Besides, if you have a rifle, you can always use it to acquire either of the other two should the need arrise.

Handgun. Can't conceal carry any of the others, which is #1 for me, and handgun can do most roles of the others...just not as well.

I'd want a rifle, because that would help me secure the ability to own shotguns/pistols again.

That being said, if I'm going to the range, I only occasionally bring a rifle, but always bring a pistol. Always.

With no more specifics as to intended use then your poll provides??

I voted shotgun.

America was settled with smooth-bore muskets, that more often then not were loaded with shot to collect game for food.

My late daddy ran a Kansas cattle farm with a single-barrel 12 ga and a .22 rifle for 50+ years, and survived quite nicely without a handgun.

He could have done as well without the rifle too.

Try feeding yourself or killing a crazy bull with a handgun and you will come around to his line of reasoning.

Unless you live in the city I guess.

I sort of scratch my head when the "you can only have....." questions come up. First thing I thought upon seeing this is, "who says so, and who's checking compliance?"

I carry a pistol and often a rifle every day to some extent. I could do fine without a shotgun, I very rarely ever use one, and wouldnt miss them, but thats not the point. I'm not giving any up.

I have no doubt I could kill any bull with a 44 or 45 Colt sixgun.
