If you had to leave you house and you didn't know where you were going or when you would be back, what TYPE of gun would you take with you? I mean, would you take a rifle, shotgun or a handgun of some type?

I ask this because most people seem to think of a SHTF weapon and envision living in the woods and fighting Russians or something but most people live in or near settled areas where living off the land would not be possible or really needed in most circumstances. Most people are suburban or at least live near civilization and to be frank, most people wouldn't want to have to live in the woods with their family and eat what they kill. If you plan on doing this if there is an evacuation, that is fine but what I am thinking is more likely is, there is a chemical or biological threat/attack and us suburban dwellers are forced to leave the town for a shelter or a another part of the state/nation with just what we can carry.

I doubt you would be allowed in a shelter with a shotgun or a rifle and there would be many cases where it would be wise NOT to be seen carrying a weapon so I think a concealable handgun of some sort makes the most sense. You probably have a better chance of being shot by the police or the military if they see you have a gun than being shot by a looter. If you have a handgun, you could defend yourself at least at close range and still not appear to be armed which would be handy in many cases.

Rifle.

You probably have a better chance of being shot by the police or the military if they see you have a gun than being shot by a looter.

:what:
If there's any chance that the military is going to be shooting at citizens, then I hope everyone brings a rifle...cuz we're gonna need a bunch of 'em!!!

I'd have a handgun concealed on my person, a rifle concealed in my vehicle, and I'd not go anywhere near an organized shelter.

I'll be carrying a 1911 IWB and an 870 Police with open sights.

An assortment of ammo for the 870:
Bird Shot, OO, and Slugs.

If this scenario played out here in the U.S. of A,
I'd most likely grab My SIG-SAUER .45 caliber
P220A.

but OTOH, if we were on foreign soil, I think I
would prefer the SIG-SAUER 9m/m P228; since
the 9 is a NATO round.

My Mossberg 500. You just can't beat the versatility -- everything from small game loads to slugs.

Of course, if I ever get around to buying a better quality pump, then it would be that.

While I see the point of .22s in terms of ammo weight and cost, if I were going to use it for self protection as well as hunting, I just wouldn't be happy. A moron who stupidly scoffs at a .22 will back down from a shotgun. Yeah, the .22 could be effective against him, but the point is to avoid the fight if possible.

If I had to take a handgun, it would be some sort of revolver simply for the ease of care. I love .357 mag, but that might not be a feasible load. Anyway, the conceivability factor of a handgun is less important to me than the versatility factor of a shotgun.

Perfect: A pump, a .22 rifle and a .357 revolver.

I'd rather have a handgun on my person that I could relatively conceal than a rifle or shotgun that I would have to stash now and then to gain access to certain places. And if I could only take one... it would be... it would be... Grudgingly, I guess it would be my Glock 23 though I can think of no reason to leave my Kahr P9 or my P32 behind.

But I'd be in a cabin on an easily defendable hill as soon as possible and there will be additional weapons there.

I'm not sure if my pistol counts as if I have my pants on, chances are I have my gat with me.

But I'd have to take the nuke since you called it 'tactical'...is it black or twotone? :D

If I HAD to choose just one... nah, I wouldn't do it. I'd take the H&K9mm, the H&K.40, Thompson .22 semi-auto rifle and the Blaser LRSII .308 scoped rifle.

Needless to say, I'd also carry all the ammo I could possibly load into the truck. As someone else said, I'd also stay far away from any "shelters" as they probably wouldn't let me walk in with all that hardware.

Have a plan, that's the important thing.
