Can someone please post a comparison of the weights of the classic 12 gauge pump shotguns with same length barrels and wood furniture.

In particular, what were the relative weights of:

Winchester Model 12
Winchester 1897
Remington 870 Wingmaster
Remington 31
Ithaca 37
Stevens 620

My question is motivated because my Stevens 620 seems very heavy

It depends on barrel length, vent rib or not and other factors. A 12 guage 870 with a 26" light contour barrel will weigh pretty close to 6 3/4 lbs. Standard barrels will weigh between 7.25 to 7.5 lbs.

I cannot say for sure about the others because of my limited use of them but a Mossberg 500 will be about 1/4 lb less than a comparable 870.

A Browning BPS will be about 1/4 lb heavier than an 870 and a Benelli Nova will weigh around 1/2 lb more than an 870.

Never owned the Ithica, but the ones I've handled weigh less than an 870 can't say for sure how much. The others I've actually owned and placed on my scales. I've found factory specs to sometimes be quite inaccurate.

This is not an exact science because individual pieces of wood can be more or less dense changing the weight slightly.

If the Stevens 620 is anything like the 520, it's because the receiver is a tank! Darn thing is close to 1/4" thick.

I just weighed my Western Field 30 (aka: Stevens 520) at 8lbs empty. 28" plain barrel.

The 870 is a mixed bag.

The Express with Rem Chokes is a pig. I have one. I believe some early Rem Choke Wingmasters were no better. The Wingmaster Light Contour is a dream to swing, though. (Both 12 Gauge). The older guns with fixed chokes have lighter barrels, also, and feel good.

Ithaca 37s were absolutely wonderful guns to handle. They still are. As upland pumps go, I don't think it gets any better. Subgauge Model 12s, even 16 Gauge, are great, too.

It's a lot easier to get a nice gun if you can avoid the silliness of 12 Gauge.
