Pfft wood............everyone knows that the new Glock (TM) Polymer Composite Decking is way more dependable and I saw a vid where they ran over it with a cement truck and lit it on fire and you could still kill a charging bear with it.:neener:

Pine is cheap and comes in many varieties.
Oak has more heft but is more expensive and heavier.
high-power logs such as hickory, sycamore, and walnut are excellent stoppers but are very expensive. with these you also run the risk of being accused of carrying excessively powerful logs that are only good for killing bears, and have no place in honest citizen's campfires.

Years ago, as a youth, I worked cutting pulp wood. I heard the story many times from several people about a guy that killed a bear with a knife.
I got up the courage to ask "jako" about it. In a slow sad voice he told me.
"The bear started it".

Uh, there's a gun in the story, so I guess this is on topic, though I had to think about it for a second.

I wonder who would win in a fight? This guy, or the the guy who killed the shark with his bare hands after it ate his nephew's arm?
