What would you do to prevent gun deaths?

Improve the economic climate in rural Pennsylvania so that bitter people stop clinging to their guns. When they relax their grip on their guns, snatch them away.

I think this is a tongue-in-cheek parody of a comment by a certain political candidate whose last name begins with "O."

easiest way to prevent gun deaths?

have a good gunsmith... be able to get parts... and proper maintenance and storage.. then your gun has a high probability of surviving and not dying!

Let's remember our history for a moment. The Depression was horrible economic times and yet, gun crime was virtually non existant. Why? PERSONAL RESPONSIBILITY! kids got spanked when they misbehaved, people stood up and the law/State wasn't the only dispenser of justice.

When I was a kid, I saw a soldier returning from Viet Nam with his rifle right next to him in the cabin of the airplane with the rest of us in coach. Threat? I hardly think so.

I could buy a .22 through my Boy's Life magazine by mail order.

What's made gun crime so bad IMO is the absence of morality and accountability. Combine that with movies and television/video games and the lack of exposure to the real thing through the efforts of the anti Constitutional forces of gun control and you have delinquent minors and adults that lack the vision to know what really happens when you point and fire. Add to this the lack of conscern for the outcome and you have our current situation.

1) Mandatory gun education in schools just like HIV / SEX-ED / DRUG Classes

2) Severely increase penalty for breaking of gun laws (more than 20,000 nationwide last I heard so no need for more) with no plea bargains or time off for good behaviour.

3) Liberalize many guns laws to offset the good guys caught up in the draconian sentences just put in place.

4) Understand you can't control people and prevent everything

Since 80% of violent crime is committed by 20% of the criminal population and whereas 73% of violent crime is committed by only 6% of the cimiminal population, I would start by releasing non-violent prisoners and making sure these animals stay locked up permanently. We've all have seen what happens when cruel thugs like Patrick Purdy get released from prison.

There's an endless supply of these broken minds in this culture. We either fix it or it'll be our undoing!
We're already the incarceration capital of the world!

what i would do is put the crooks in jail ,doing something productive, likepicking up the road kills and other crappy jobs noone else wants to do,like farm work that will help with the illegal problem also, and teach gun seafty at a young age to be continued threw school, have to have education

i read nothing but the title of the thread.

Guns are supposed to cause deaths. Guns are not supposed to cause accidental deaths. If you really want to be accurate...guns don't cause anything. People cause deaths. Peole prevent deaths. The guns are a separate an insignificant minutiae.

So take this thread and stick it where the sun don't shine.

1. Education and safety classes at a young age
2. Education and safety classes at around middle school, when kids are more responsible and be can allowed to hold a firearm without treating it like a toy
3. Harsh sentences for those who lack the mental capability to follow the law

Maybe a criminal won't want to rob a store with a gun if it means he'll get 20 years without parole for using a firearm for malicious purposes.

I have a few ideas that would reduce both accidental and deliberate deaths associated with firearms:

1) The school system needs too teach both reason and accountability. I'm not sure enough people are learning cause and effect relationships effectively enough. Along with effective cause/effect education the idea of accountability needs to be strongly instilled in every student. Underprivilege should never be seen as an acceptable excuse for ones actions.

2) Effective conflict resolution training should be included in all school curriculum. I think the days of training that "violence is never the answer" should come to an end. There are times and places where use of force is the best answer. If an individual has been trained that "violence is never the answer" and they are confronted with a situation where a use of some force would be appropriate, they are more likely to either needlessly become a victim or resort to outside cultural influences and escalate the situation with potentially unnecessary force. This will occur because the individual received inadequate conflict training and are operating outside the understanding of social acceptance.

3) Safety training, Safety training, Safety training. The 4 rules should be in every elementary school curriculum. The 4 rules should be as ubiquitous as stop drop and roll. Hunter safety (or an urban appropriate equivalent) should be taught in late elementary or middle school.

4) Shooting sports should be part of every school's phys-ed curriculum. There should be some version of airsoft / air rifle marksmanship taught in elementary school, single shot rimfire in middle school, and perhaps centerfire rifle, some sort of pistol, and sporting clays in high school. I think an organization like the CMP should be properly funded both through the .gov and a grant program from all the players in the shooting industry to equip the nations school system with the firearms, targets, training materials and proper range design to add shooting facilities to the schools that have room for them.

Through regular exposure to firearms safety, proper safe use, and experience with shooting sports in a solid generation or so, the use of a gun in a crime would be seen as not really different than the use of a baseball bat to commit a murder would be seen today. murder is a crime no less, but if more of society saw it as committed with a piece of sporting equipment instead of an evil nasty gun, the stigma wouldn't be the same.

For all those who advocate mandatory training, I assume you will allow students whose religion does not allow this will be able to avoid this? What about parents who don't want their children to handle weapons? Should their wishes be respected?

Why not let parents raise their kids and we mind our own business?

Parenting is the problem, not schools. Its not the government's responsibility, who runs the school system, to raise your child to not be an idiot or a criminal. Its a parental/personal responsibility and until we get that through our fat heads, we will continue to have the issues of contemporary society. Governments shouldn't be raising children, parents should be. How can a generation a children raised to have a hands off approach to EVERYTHING (taught to sue, taught to rely on gov't services like police for protection, unemployment for money, food stamps for sustinence, etc) have the balls to continue to ask the government to now raise their children 'right'??? When people get this ingrained into their head, then we might see the rise of personal responsibility in society.

Back to the OP, "gun death" is what has been shown here, the death of a firearm. A gun doesn't kill people because it decided "Today's a day fo' killin'." People kill people and they just happened to use a gun instead of a hammer, stick, arrow, knife, car, etc. I can with confidence say that most likely 95% of the firearms people have on this forum have never been used in any vicious manner towards another human being, including self defense. That should support the fact that guns don't kill people, people kill people.

My suggestion was actually imprisoning people for violent offences, instead of letting them out the first, second, or thirteenth time.

Ending the stupid War on Some Drugs would drop violent crime rates a lot, too, by killing the profit motive for various inner-city gangs.

Re: to prevent gun deaths

Issue "happy pills" to everyone. That would eliminate 1/2 or better of all gun deaths, as 1/2 or more are suicides.

You cannot register a car to drive unless you use your drivers license. How about a state/federal firearm license?

CCW holders go through classes, proficiency testing, NICS background checks and fingerprinting for state licensing.

Governments already know CCWs own firearms and the FBI has records of NICS checks (do they erase them after 24 hours?) so what's the big deal?

It is a BIG deal.

License or educate? Who pays?

There are various

classes of "gun deaths".
Suicides, probably not affected by gun bans or availability, if some one wants to he will find a way.
Accidents, a very small part, but would be reduced by education.
Domestic violence, probably like suicide, not gun sensitive, unless every restraining order came with a CCW and training.
Criminal on criminal assault, usually over drug deals, or some perceived slight. Perhaps this actually saves money.
Criminal or lunatic on innocent assault. This is exceedinly rare and increased rates of CCW would reduce it.

Put the criminals that get caught using a firearm in prison and throw away the key.Every state has these laws but they don't enforce them. If a death sentence is handed out ,do it within 30 days. Saddam didn't get years of appeals!

Mandatory safety training in public schools. I don't think anyone's religion should have an influence on whether weapons should be handled properly anymore than it would be a concern for driver's ed. You wouldn't even have to have real weapons present, just watch some Eddie Eagle videos or NRA safety videos and have a quiz afterwards. There's no reason why even anti-gun folks should be against teaching safety procedures, but they seem to of the mindset that it's safer to put their heads in the sand and ignore the issue entirely.

I'd love to see the return of target shooting and skeet clubs to schools, the battle will be won by bringing guns even farther into the mainstream, the way they used to be. No one used to have a problem with guns being around, but the past two generations have been raised with the mindset that guns are "bad" and have no place in society outside of LE or .mil. If more people can be shown that guns have a very useful place in society, they will be more accepted as normal and not ostracized.

As previously mentioned, mandatory gunsafety training in all schools and pre schools.
Campaigns to make people spend their money on domesticmade products and services and thus reducing unemployment and increasing the taxbase. Better bordercontrols to stop drugimports, fewer TV-channels, so that people actually have something to talk about.
Restructure the geography of cities so that people no longer needs to commute and so that parents have a couple more hours for their kids and partners each day.
Dare to involve yourselves in other families kids, if their parents dont teach them right from wrong, do it yourself.

when the jails fill up, take X number of 'bangers', gang or otherwise, from the various institutions (lottery style) and in a large desolate rocky area divide them into teams. re-issue them their original weapons or glock for-tays and about 100 rounds of ammo. televise live on a school day. and prisoners not on tv get the day off to watch. betting is allowed and taxed. last man standing gets to finish his sentence in a 'country club' setting--
a few times a year have special events: 'bangers' vrs convicted politicians or lawyers.......sorry but i repeat myself

to keep the action moving along, good gun handling skills should be taught in elementary school. this will help in that punks will 1) have better hits on each other and 2) fewer hits on the innocents.

+1 Guns and more-----hot bunk and WORK. sure way to cut down on recidivism. and no time off for good behavior. time will be ADDED for bad behavior.

I would do what's been proven to work:

Increase patrol time vs. donut shop time
Increase investigation rates for violent crimes
Increase arrest rates for violent crimes
Increase prosecution rates
Increase conviction rates
Increase conviction-appeal-opposition success rates
Increase punishment for crime in general - increase sentences for violent crime convictions
Increase "enhanced sentencing" punishment (do crime x, get sentence y; do crime x using a gun in furtherance, get sentence y + z)
Make violent crime prisoners work on chain-gangs and such.
Eliminate the war on some drugs; legalize most drugs and poof, the gangs will disappear without a product to sustain them. Decriminalize hard drugs to a large extent.
Increase civil penalties for negligence and gross negligence resulting in an unathorized person getting a gun where harm results.
Increase criminal penalties for same when there has been extremely gross nelgigence or recklessness.
Make sure NICS is always used, even on private sales. (oooh, that's gonna be unpopular)
Make sure NICS check includes those adjudicted mentally defective - I think the post-VT bill did this.

Yep, that would do it. Violent crime with guns and in general would decrease somewhere on the order of 85%-99%. But instead we're spending untold billions on hassling druggies, and thereby creating a market for the gangs, and the REASON for them to kill each other.
